Last week, we took Youngstown John Boccieri to task for his support of Card Check. This week, we're questioning whether he actually wants to live in the district he represents.
When Boccieri kicked off his bid for the 16th District Congressional seat, he did not live in the 16th District. He lived and owned a home in New Middletown, which is located in the 6th District - ten minutes south of Youngstown. As his campaign progressed, the fact that he didn't live in the district became a major issue, so Boccieri tried to sweep the issue under the rug by putting his New Middletown home up for sale and renting a home in Alliance, which is in the 16th District.
At first glance, it seems that Boccieri actually wants to live in the district he represents. But, when one digs deeper into the issue, questions arise. According to the Mahoning County Auditor, Boccieri's out-of-district home is valued at $216,700, which is also what it was valued at last year during the campaign. Currently, Boccieri's home is for sale for $259,900 - $43,200 above market value. During the campaign, Boccieri brushed off this discrepancy, blaming it on the weak housing market. If it was (and still is) such a terrible time to have a house on the market, why the heck would you put your house up for sale that much above market value? This indicates to me that he never had an interest in selling it and wants to move back out of the 16th district when the opportunity presents itself.
Maybe he's waiting for his out-of-district home to get gerrymandered into the district he represents? Only time will tell with Youngstown John.
