Vatican Loves Saddam
A top Vatican official said Tuesday he felt pity and compassion for Saddam Hussein and criticized the U.S. military for showing video footage of him being treated "like a cow."
Cardinal Renato Martino, head of the Vatican's Justice and Peace department and a former papal envoy to the United Nations, told a news conference it would be "illusory" to think the arrest of the former Iraqi president would heal all the damage caused by a war which the Holy See opposed.
"I felt pity to see this man destroyed, (the military) looking at his teeth as if he were a cow. They could have spared us these pictures," he said.
"Seeing him like this, a man in his tragedy, despite all the heavy blame he bears, I had a sense of compassion for him," he said in answer to questions about Saddam's arrest.

Matt's Chat
And these fools wonder why they are having trouble keeping the pews filled. This is an outrage. Every Catholic should express their feelings about this in the collection plate. Actually, I would encourage those few that are left (after the whole gay priest raping adolescent boys fiasco) to boycott Mass. This man has engaged in genocide! I can't believe the ridiculousness of the Church I grew up with. They have no idea what they are doing or saying. Clearly the time has come for the pope to step down so the Church will have a voice of reason.
Mark's Remarks
While I will not be as boisterous in my criticism of the Church, I do hear Matt's pain as a Catholic and empathize with it. Although, if you read closer, you can see this person's sympathies...They used to work with the Unimportant Nobodies, the UN. This cardinal should be censured, to be sure. I mean, what about the outrage of dragging our boys through the streets? Where was the cardinal then? What about having our men and women taken prisoner broadcast by Saddam? What about the outrage then?
This whole "like a cow" and "disrespecting him" garbage is a coverup. They are looking for ways to demonize the US again. Since we proved we were able to get Saddam, the folks who want to bring Bush down now have to trumpet out some other reasons to get rid of him.
This cardinal's talk is shameful. This dictator received far more respect than he accorded his hundreds of thousands of victims, I assure you. He was being given a full health exam.
Don't you people get it? If we just went out and said, "hey we got Saddam!" you liberals out there and doubters would say, "show me the proof." Also, you libs out there would probably say we are killing and torturing him. The video is assurance he was taken with the respect he never gave anyone else, and was treated far better than his prisoners he took. I cannot believe this spew and spin.
And, if we would have really treated him like a cow, we would have skewered his butt and barbequed him. Spin that one all you like.
