Does Freedom Trump Terrorism?

The WMD Mailbag Correspondent apparently reads conservative sites other than WMD. This time, he's zeroed in on the paleo-conservative magazine American Conservative for his latest stab at President Bush and the Iraq War.

It's a fine day when liberals are citing Pat Buchannan's magazine...

Anyway, let's get to the point...the irony just might kill me...

James Payne makes the argument that freedom hasn't stopped terrorism and cites a number of historical references to back up his claim. This is the sort of cherry-picking of history that is difficult to counter on the surface because it sounds so reasonable and rational. The problem with this sort of thinking is that while we did have the Weather Underground and Timothy McVeigh, both were defeated. Sure damage was done, but I don't think you can say that terrorism is running rampant in the United States these days. And that's the whole point of freedom defeating terrorism...when people have a choice between crazies like Ted Kaczynski or freedom, freedom ultimately wins every time.

Islamofascism isn't your run-of-the-mill gang of thugs like the Black Panthers either. Islamofascists really aren't interested in making their lives any better or more utopian...they want all freedom-loving people dead. I've been criticised for mocking/bashing the French, but just think what those Islamosfascists are thinking about that scarf ban...there will be retribution for that you can count on it. They aren't just after the residents of Jesusland, they want to kill all liberal hedonists too.

In the end, my problem with "historical" arguments such as the one Mr. Payne makes is that it doesn't take the result of history in to account.

Mark's Remarks

What the so-called correspondent and this article fail to take into consideration, is like, you know, what is going on, like....NOW! Let's see....terror attacks are down in Iraq. Support for insurgents is down. Afghanistan is relatively peaceful compared to Taliban days (well, it was peaceful if you were part of the Taliban, I guess), Lebanese are wanting Syria gone, which lessens safe havens for terrorists.

Of course, we won't talk about, like, the Marshall Plan like, you know, prevented totalitarian terror states from reforming in Italy, Japan and Germany, after like, you know, that big war we fought, that one time, you know, when Belgium and France caved (Petain, anyone?)and England, the Polish resistance, a few French resistance fighters, maybe one or two mini-french, the United States and others had to fix the, like, appeasing attitudes of other countries?
