A growing majority of French voters oppose the European Union constitution in the run-up to a May 29 referendum, anopinion poll shows, and a minister warned a "No" vote would plunge the EU into a crisis.Ah...unity...is splendid, eh?
The Ifop poll for the Journal du Dimanche newspaper said 55 percent would vote "No" and 45 percent "Yes". The poll, conducted on March31 and April 1, showed a two percentage point rise in the "No" vote from March 24.
Just over a third of those surveyed said they could change their view, but the poll was the sixth consecutive one since mid-March to put the"No" vote ahead.
"If one country in the Union rejects the constitution, then there will be no constitution. We would stick with the existing treaties which areinadequate," Foreign Minister Michel Barnier told reporters before the poll was released.
"We would get into a rut, we would be in a sort of breakdown," he said, speaking at an event to promote the treaty.
Mark's Remarks
Those unilateralists! How dare they act in a unilateral way! Who do they think they are, people of significance? How will they ever live with the Belgian condemnation?
