So much for attempting to bridge the divide and be the Great Moderator...During debate on the 2006 budget, HillRod tried to insert an amendment to add $100 MILLION for family planning services (read, abortion clinics), sex education and contraception programs (yes, that's right Johnny Kindergartner, pull the Trojan over the banana), along with a provision that NONE of the funds would be used to expand the "abstinence only" programs (you know, the only 100% effective means of preventing pregnancy). The vote was 47-53, split mostly along party lines (no way!)
HillRod was shocked: "I'm trying to understand in my own mind what the objections are. For those people who are deeply committed to a position that is against abortion, this should be an amendment they embrace." No Madame Senator, not if it excludes the only guaranteed way of not becoming pregnant. No, Madame Senator, not if it continues to promote the free love-pro-death-no responsibility attitude of the 1970s.
4/6 Update: Matt's Chat
I would like to go on record as saying that the 70's sucked. Aside from the birth of myself and my friends, the '75 and '76 Cincinnati Reds, and Star Wars, nothing good came from that horrible decade of doom and gloom. That is all.
