Democratic Leaders already declared their support for the "slow-bleed" strategy authored by Rep. John Murtha (D-PA), which would exploit an emergency funding bill to hamstring American troops in combat by denying them the resources and reinforcements they need to succeed. Now, liberal House Democrats are in "full-blown revolt" over how to approach a critical troop funding bill, demanding instead a vote to simply cut off funding. The question is: will Democratic Leaders ignore their party's Left? According to the LA Times:"Murtha's measure does not go far enough to satisfy some antiwar Democrats. Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-Petaluma), for example, said she would vote against the war funding bill even if the House accepted the conditions aimed at blocking the troop increase. In the Washington Times, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) argues that voting for any troop funding bill amounts to support for "continuation" of the war:
"'People voted for Democrats [in November] because they want us to change the course in Iraq ,' Woolsey said.""'The American people want us to get out of Iraq ,' Mr. Kucinich said. 'They expect Democrats to move quickly to end our involvement in Iraq . If Congress approves the supplemental appropriation, President Bush will have the money he needs to keep the war going through the end of his term.'"The Contra Costa Times quoted Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) saying the " Iraq war must be ended quickly":"Ending the Iraq war is 'the most pressing issue our nation faces today,' she said, touting a bill she has co-sponsored to withdraw troops within six months..."In the Politico today, Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR) said he'd like to see language in the troop funding bill that sets an arbitrary timeline for withdrawal, leaving Iraq to al Qaeda:"I would like to see an alternative that would set a timeline, but right now I'm hoping to get something meaningful incorporated into the bill."According to Roll Call, other Members like Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) and Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) will "not vote for the war supplemental no matter what amendments were allowed." The San Francisco Chronicle quotes Woolsey saying:"[T]here's a huge group of us who won't support the supplemental. I'm among them,'' said Woolsey, who has opposed previous special spending bills for the war."With all of this trouble brewing in the Democratic caucus, will Democratic Leaders ignore their party's left? And more importantly, when will Democrats bring the troop funding bill to the House floor?
