More Dem Woes

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

Original Posting on 7/30 at 10:19AM

From ABC News:
Yesterday, we found out about an interesting delegate. Today, we are learning about the top donor to Kerry/Edwards:
As Sens. John Kerry and John Edwards arrived in Boston today for the Democratic National Convention, so did the California man who is their single biggest contributor.

He is Stephen Bing, a wealthy film producer who, with little fanfare, has managed to steer a total of more than $16 million of his money to Democratic candidates and the supposedly independent groups that support them.

"To most of the people who track money and politics, they're like, who the hell is Steve Bing?" said Chuck Lewis, founder of the Center for Public Integrity, a nonprofit, nonpartisan watchdog organization.

Bing is perhaps best known for sparking a tabloid frenzy when he publicly expressed doubt that he was the father of actress Elizabeth Hurley's baby. (A paternity test proved he was indeed the father.) He repeatedly has refused to say why he is funneling millions of dollars to the Democrats.

Lewis thinks it is cause for concern.

"We can identify who the big donors are, but how much do we really know about any of them?" he said.

In fact, Democratic Party officials said they knew nothing about the man who law enforcement officials tell ABC News is Bing's friend and business partner — Dominic Montemarano, a New York Mafia figure currently in federal prison on racketeering charges.

Montemarano has a long criminal record and is known to organized crime investigators by his street name, Donnie Shacks.

"Donnie Shacks' main activity was murder. No question about it. That was his main function for the Colombo family and for organized crime in general. He was one of the top hit men in the New York area," said Joe Coffey, a former NYPD investigator.
What to make of this...

On the one hand, this is kind of tabloid reporting. But it IS ABC News, not exactly the National Enquirer.

On the other hand, if this guy really is a mob figure of some sort; is there more to this story than meets the eye?

Tyler has a great post over at Red Line Rants about this article from the Wall Street Journal.

John Kerry Delenda Est!

Liberal Challenge

Quoth NRO's Jonah Goldberg:
Look, I can certainly respect those who oppose the FMA. But when Kerry says "and let's never misuse for political purposes the most precious document in American history, the Constitution of the United States," my blood boils a bit. Kerry comes from a branch of liberalism which believes in a "living, breathing," constitution -- in the words of countless liberals.

How is the notion of a Constitution which means whatever the latest and most effective petitioners want it to mean not a political misuse of that "precious document"? Can anyone imagine the most pro-gay marriage voices out there condemning a Supreme Court which found the right to marriage in the Constitution? It's like all these liberals who've discovered federalism for the first time in decades. They don't believe in federalism for discrimination rules, for abortion rights, for censorship but, suddenly, on gay marriage they love the laboratories of democracy.

When people say that the Constitution, as written, is an evolving document they are in effect saying it can mean anything -- and therefore nothing. What is really at stake is a conflict of visions. Conservatives believe that if the Constitution's meaning is permanent. If we want the Constitution to say something new, it should be amended not reinterpreted. Liberals believe that the Constitution is a malleable, metaphorical mirror of all good things. If the community decides that gay marriage is good, then the Constitution must support gay marriage. That to me is a far more offensive abuse of our most precious document than trying to amend it
Or...is it that Democrats just don't like it when Republicans play their game? Just asking...

The Week Ahead

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

The San Francisco Chronicle and the LA Times reports that the President is preparing to deliver remarks and executive orders on revamping out intelligence services.

As much as I would like to think there will be sweeping changes, I don't expect the President will change all that much. I do not anticipate he'll want a Secretary of Intelligence or a National Intelligence Director (or whatever they're calling those positions these days) Although the NID post has more of a chance than the cabinet-level post. I just don't forsee any Senate-confirmable posts being overly useful.

I would much rather see an MI-5 type organization created using the best elements of both the CIA and the FBI. The FBI should remain a law enforcement body and the CIA has plenty of work to do on foreign threat assessment. Honestly, some sort of domestic Op-Center works for me.

More Lies From Gore & Kerry Exposed

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

Remeber when Al Gore was at that MoveOn.org rally and told the story about a family having a bake sale to raise funds for bullet proof vests? Remember John Kerry echoing that same line?

It didn't happen.

From the National Review:
It doesn't appear that any family-organized bake sales for body armor took place. Some New Hampshire families held a bake sale in early May to raise money for more "care package items" and to fund a coming-home party next year. The mother of one soldier was grateful to those who donated calling cards because calling cards, she explained, "are the most important thing." In Tennessee, a chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars held a dance and a bake sale to support a Marine who had returned to their community from Afghanistan missing a leg. And police officers around the country have collected discarded bulletproof vests and shipped them to Iraq for the troops to use on the doors and floors of their Humvees, making them lightly armored vehicles. "It doesn't matter whether or not you're in favor of the war — the people over there still need our help and support," the Michigan leader of one such effort said. Many Americans are inspired by similar sentiments.

A few, though, play on those sentiments for political gain — as Gore and Kerry have done. The Kevlar they refer to is the material used to line vests and Humvees, helping to protect soldiers from enemy fire. The material is heavy and deflects only shrapnel, not bullets. In 1999, the vests were modernized: The new armor, known as "Interceptor" body armor, is about ten pounds lighter and offers protection against machine guns fired at point-blank range. The new technology is also used to make removable ceramic plates that line both vests and Humvees, and was first used in combat operations in Afghanistan.
What complete political hacks.

Just remember folks, as Hugh Hewitt is fond of saying "If it isn't close, they can't cheat." And he is right. This is just another in a long line of lies, distortions, and fabrications by prominent Democrats that must be challenged.

High Value AQ Terrorist Caught in Pakistan

al-Reuters reports, you decide...
Pakistan has arrested a senior al Qaeda figure with a bounty of up to $25 million on his head, Interior Minister Makhdoom Faisal Saleh Hayat told CNN television Thursday.
He said the suspect had been captured during a raid in central Pakistan a few days ago. He did not identify the captive but said he was "a person who is most wanted internationally."

Al Arabiya satellite news channel quoted Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf as saying the suspect was arrested Sunday.

"The Pakistani president said the arrested person is Tanzanian who is married to an Uzbek woman, and who is wanted by the United States," the station said.

Al Arabiya said the suspect may be Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, a Tanzanian who is on the FBI's most wanted "terrorists" list for his alleged role in the 1998 bombings by al Qaeda of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

A Delegate You Won't Be Hearing About

Debbie Schlussel has the goods on a Democratic delegate with ties to the Detroit cell of al Qaeda.
John Kerry is trying to show he’s "tough on terrorism."

But with delegates like Ismael Ahmed, it’s a tough sell.

Ahmed, a Michigan delegate to this week’s Democratic National Convention, is a long-time Democratic activist and a repeat delegate.

But the Democrats aren’t touting him to the media. In fact, the only place you’ll read about Ahmed’s delegate credentials is on Al-Jazeerah’s website.

In this first Presidential nominating convention since 9/11, Ahmed’s presence at the convention and his views are more disturbing than ever.

Ahmed is the founder and executive director of ACCESS – the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services, based in Dearborn, Michigan.

Under Ahmed’s leadership, ACCESS paid for commercial driving lessons and attempts at hazardous material hauling certificates for two men convicted as part of the Detroit Al-Qaeda sleeper cell. Testimony at their trial revealed that the men planned to bomb the MGM Grand Casino and a host of other prominent US sites.
VERY interesting read...

Don't they vet these delegates? First Ohio's Democrat of the Year Jerry Springer, now this...

Diplomats and Military Commanders for Change

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

A group of partisan hacks backing Kerry released a statement yesterday claiming that America isn't safer than we were before the Iraq war. This is nothing more than political posturing. Here is the opening paragraph:
President Bush asserts that America is safer as a result of the war in Iraq. But, according to recent Gallup, CBS and NBC polls, Americans increasingly feel less secure because of the war. They are right. While the president declared victory in Afghanistan after the major battles with Al Qaeda, it is clear Al Qaeda is still active, and according to senior Bush administration officials is currently plotting new attacks against the US from the Afghan-Pakistan border. Al Qaeda has also worked successfully to help new terrorist organizations and activities around the world - Indonesia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, and Spain -- as well as Iraq.
America is safer, but we are not safe and nobody is saying otherwise. We still have a lot of work to do on the Global War on Terror. These partisans will have you believe that polls of the American people mean something about our degree of safty. There is a difference between the reality of the level of safty and our perception of our safty. One would think diplomats and Military Commanders would know that. The rest of the paragraph is nothing more than window dressing. Of course al Qaeda is still active, but they are being persued vigorously. That claim about "new" terrorist organizations is curious too...
In Afghanistan, the US has been diverted by war in Iraq into a woefully inadequate investment of military, financial and political resources - including the leadership needed to mobilize strong international support. Military and reconstruction assistance levels per capita by the US and its NATO allies are about one tenth of that for Bosnia and Kosovo. As a result, security has declined, opium production is soaring (90 percent of world total), Taliban has made a comeback, planned parliamentary elections for October have been postponed, and international assistance workers have ceased to operate in many provinces. After two and one half years of trumpeting victory, we are bogged down. Our enemies are encouraged.
You can almost sense that they want to say quagmire. For the situation in Afghanistan I point the reader to another post here. These guys are showing great disrespect to the men and women of our armed forces who have made significant and fantastic progress in a country that was ruled by a brutal theocracy not that long ago.
In Iraq, we are also bogged down in insurgency and terrorism. The mission has not been accomplished, despite political changes and a belated role for the United Nations. American and Iraqi casualties continue to mount. Security is highly problematic and the political future is murky. The US Occupation of an Islamic country is seen by most in the Muslim world as comparable to the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. Muslim fighters flock to Iraq as they once did to Afghanistan. Our friends are discouraged and unwilling to contribute the needed additional resources, even to protect the new UN Representative. Some countries and companies have pulled out, under threat. Our enemies around the world are heartened.
In regards to the insurgency and terrorism we are facing in Iraq, one must question the motivations behind these actions. These thugs do not want democracy and freedom to reign in Iraq. We are winning the greater war in Iraq, but liberal partisans would have us believe that we are losing.

Once more, we return to the "Mission Accomplished" banner. That was the ship's mission that was accomplished, not the President's. The crew put that sign up, not the President. And their mission WAS accomplished; they should be free to celebrate that success. The level of childishness being displayed on the part of these propagandists is astonishing. Rather than celebrate the historic change that is taking place in Iraq, the folks are touting the casualty scoreboard. The only reason why our enemies are heartened is because those who have pulled out have capitulated to terrorist demands; the "Change" these guys seek would place us all in danger because they to would surrender to the terrorists.

Next, they invoke VIETNAM! Did you know John Kerry served in VIETNAM!?
The perception of US military strength is being eroded, as equipment and personnel and budgets are strained to the limit in Iraq. Once again, as in Vietnam, Lebanon and Somalia, highly superior US forces are now seen as vulnerable to guerilla warfare and terrorism. The deterrent value of US military might has been weakened.
Our highly superior US forces have ALWAYS been vulnerable to guerilla warfare and terrorism. The eight years of the Clinton administration were spent engaged in social engineering instead of combat readiness for the "next battle." If these "diplomats" and "military commanders" really think the deterrent value of the US military might has fallen so much, you might ask them who they suspect will invade us? The United States is still the strongest military force in the world and we project that force quite well. Remember, no other force in the history of warfare went so far so quickly than our guys (Hoo-rah!) did in Iraq. What an insult to our brave men and women in the finest military on the planet.
Iran and North Korea, the other two members of the "Axis of Evil", have not been intimidated by threats of unilateral US preemptive action. Nor have they responded to ambivalent United States diplomacy. As a result, North Korea is apparently producing more nuclear weapons and Iran has continued to develop its nuclear capacity. Due to the situation in Iraq, Iran is also assuming an increasingly powerful regional role.
Notice no mention of the success in Libya.

We're playing the UN/IAEA game with Iran and we are engaged in multi-lateral diplomatic efforts with North Korea. That's what we're supposed to do. Are these guys actually advocating pre-emptive action? What solution do they offer us?

Iran has internal problems with their civilian population that you aren't hearing about. It wouldn't surprise me if that domino doesn't start shaking a bit more the closer they get to getting that bomb (which Israel will never allow them to have).

North Korea's nuclear success is deeply rooted in the Clinton administration. President Bush was handed a fine mess when he took over and has managed the crisis to the best of anyone's ability without giving away everything.
Absent a truly serious visible effort to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict or restrain the aggressive Israeli tactics on the ground, the US is increasingly identified in the Arab world as totally supportive of Israeli PM Sharon's policies. This further exacerbates worldwide Muslim anger at the US over Iraq, undercuts efforts at reform, and increases likelihood of future anti-US terrorism among young people.
And now we turn to anti-Semitism on the part of these "diplomats" and "military commanders." Lest these gentlemen forget to remind you, Israel offered Arafat everything he wanted and he rejected the deal. Arafat and his ilk want the Israelis dead. That is the what the conflict is about. Sharon has every right to defend his nation. The Arab world does not care about the Israel-Palestine problem or they would have done something about it. The Muslim world on the other hand, has turned to terrorism. I remind the reader that we are fighting a Global War on Terrorism...
In short, progress in the struggle against terrorism has been offset by faulty policy. The overall result is that the Bush Administration's war in Iraq leaves the United States less secure rather than more.

It is time for a change.
It is time for change. And we are seeing all kinds of change in the Middle East. Democracy and freedom (outside of Israel) is finally coming to a region that has never had such liberty ever before. There is no way that can be deemed faulty policy. For far too long, "diplomats" and "military commanders" have resorted stalling tactics that have resulted in more civilian deaths by terrorist action and legitimate retalitory strikes. In the post-9/11 world, that is no longer acceptable. President Bush is doing something about it. "Diplomats" and "military commanders" would rather he didn't. What does that tell you about their intentions for the world and this great nation?

Why I Don't Care About the DNC

An editorial by Matt Hurley

Loyal readers of WMD, you may be wondering why there hasn't been much coverage of the Democratic National Convention on our website.  The reason is quite simple actually: I don't care.

Let's recap what we've seen thus far: Michael Moore, Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, HILLARY! and Bill Clinton, Howard Dean and Ron Reagan Jr.  Those are the stories that have come out of this convention.

Despite calls from the campaign to accentuate the positive and downplay the negative, Michael Moore has been greeted as some sort of larger than life super hero.  The man was invited to sit the the box of former President Jimmy Carter for crying out loud.  What kind of positive message does that send?  His film has been exposed as being dishonest and loose with the facts which is par for the course with Mr. Moore.  That the DNC and the Kerry/Edwards campaign takes this guy seriously at all shows much about the kind of administration we would have should the unthinkable actually happens and Kerry wins this election.

That Jimmy Carter should lecture ANYBODY, let alone George W. Bush, about foreign policy is a joke that just isn't funny.  Perhaps he thinks the American people have forgotten about the blunders of Desert One and the Iran hostage situation.  I pity to think that Carter would have to be reminded about his Misery Index on the domestic front.  Carter is at his best when he's building houses for Habitat For Humanity.  It is where is heart is and that is where his legacy lies.  Bringing him out to spew venom at this convention is crazy.

Al Gore STILL has not gotten over the fact that he lost the 2000 election fair and square.  This fact continues to make me grateful that he did in fact lose.  His leadership, if you can call it that, has done more to divide this nation than any film Michael Moore could ever hope to produce.  What a childish and self-serving tool this guy is...

We all know that what the party really wants is HILLARY!   Her speech introducing her husband wasn't really about that at all; but rather, was more about whipping up the base for her in 2008.  If the DNC really thought they had a chance here, neither Clintons would be IN the state of Massachusetts, let alone at the convention as speakers.

Bill Clinton is STILL trying desperately to rewrite his legacy.  His speech was filled with so many inaccuracies wherein he took credit for events and situations that had nothing to do with him.  The man gives credit to no one.  It is all about Bill Clinton.  And the Democrats love it.  There is just one problem for the Democrats: he can't run again.  Now what?

Howard Dean continues to disappoint.  He is supposed to offer up the red meat to the base, but didn't.  Did he cave to the pressure from the DNC and the campaign to tone it down?  Who knows.  And more importantly, who cares?  There continue to be complaints that John Kerry has been misidentified as an uber-liberal (and John Edwards too, for that matter) and I suppose when you compare Kerry to Dean, there might be an argument there.  The problem is that Dean isn't running and Kerry's record accurately demonstrates him to be a radical liberal.  All Dean does is remind the Democrats of what might have been...

That the Democratic Party would politicize Ronald Reagan's death, especially after warning the Republicans against such a travesty, is despicable.  Furthermore, Ron Jr. is ill-informed on the subject of stem cell research and its potential in fighting Alzheimer's Disease.  The truth is that Ron Jr. doesn't really care about any of that.  He hated his father's politics and now has found, at least in his own mind, a way to embarrass those who supported his father's ideas.  Like Moore, Ron Reagan Jr. is nothing more than a tool that will be put back on the shelf until the next time they need him as soon as possible.

And what is yet to come?  We'll hear from John Edwards and John Kerry and they will try to hock the same wares they've been trading for a couple of weeks now.  The Johns will try to convince us that they aren't super-liberals; that, in fact, they are moderate centrists out to help the little guy.  The campaign appears to be run by amateurs and bunglers but we'll hear about how much better the country will be if only we will vote these guys in to office.  They can't run a campaign and a convention, why should we think they will do any better for this great nation?

This convention has been a joke from the very beginning.  It has been a quagmire from start to finish.  Talk about not having a plan, this convention has been a fiasco that has cost the city of Boston dearly.  And it will probably cost the Democrats a whole lot more.

Good News From Afghanistan

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

From the New York Post:
Afghanistan has a constitution, is registering voters and is moving toward holding a presidential election in October. And the survey of 804 randomly selected male and female Afghan citizens, commissioned by the Asia Foundation notes that:

* 64 percent say the country is heading in the right direction.

* 81 percent say that they plan to vote in the October election.

* 77 percent say they believe the elections will "make a difference."

* 64 percent say they rarely or never worry about their personal safety, while under the Taliban only 36 percent felt that way.

* 62 percent rate President Hamid Karzai's performance as either good or excellent.

This was no pro-Bush put-up job. The polling firm, Charney Research, is a partisan Democratic polling firm. And superstar Democratic pollster Celinda Lake, who's read the study — and who has worked on similar polling in developing countries — calls it "very reliable."

But we won't hear about any of this at the "positive" Democratic convention...or on the nightly news...

Kerry/Edwards: NASA for Bush

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

From the Drudge Report:
Kerry campaign manager Mary Beth Cahill claims 'dirty tricks' by NASA after it released 'surprise' photographs showing the Dem presidential hopeful dressed in a space suit crawling through a rocket hatch.

Cahill, asked by FOXNEWS whether it was a dirty trick, said: 'Well, what do you think?' No photos were supposed to be taken, she said.

Begin Transcript:

HUME: i must ask you about this photograph that suddenly turned up and fell in our laps last night nobody thought it was come. nobody had reported on the event which led to-t but there he was, the senator, on all fours in this very peculiar outfit, which i guess nasa had given him. how did that come about?

CAHILL: well, yesterday senator john glenn, obviously he was an astronaut in his previous life sexrvings senator carr took a tour of a bio facility at nasa. it was just the two of them, and the nasa staff, and all of a sudden this is a leaked photo.

HUME: it was leaked?

CAHILL: yes.

HUME: it was made by nasa, right?

CAHILL: yes, it was.

HUME: so the campaign had no idea there would be any photographs.

CAHILL: none.

HUME: when it was agreed he would put on his th costume.

CAHILL: there was no press there. there was -- nothing. all of the sudden these photographs are out.

HUME: do you smell a dirty trick here?

CAHILL: well, what do you think?

HUME: that [NASA] is not a particularly political organization.

CAHILL: this was a pledge i want tour, obviously that, senator glenn and senator kerry were taking at cape canaveral, and all of the sudden these photographs appeared, and, you know, take it as you may.

BRIT: well, is there any concern that this photo might prove as embarrassing as the fabled tank photo did in 1988?

CAHILL: you know, i think probably nasa will release the photograph of senator glenn, former astronaut, in the same –

HUME: in fact, there is a shot with a bunch of them in these outfits. he is not running, of course.

CAHILL: and the thing is this is a legitimate tour of a nasa facility, and this photograph appeared out of nowhere. we were surprised. we're not surprised now.

HUME: you don't have anyone in mind? do you think --

CAHILL: i don't.
They've come unglued. No other commentary is possible... I'm speechless, if you can believe that...

F-9/11 Perspective

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

Source:
The AP has a list of the latest figures on how much various flicks have made recently:
1. "The Bourne Supremacy," Universal, $52,521,865, 3,165 locations, $16,595 average, $52,521,865, one week.

2. "I, Robot," Fox, $21,728,525, 3,494 locations, $6,219 average, $95,123,749, two weeks.
...
7. "Fahrenheit 9/11," Lions Gate, $4,759,921, 1,855 locations, $2,566 average, $103,115,645, five weeks.
...
10. "Shrek 2," DreamWorks, $2,316,663, 1,559 locations, $1,486 average, $429,441,294, 10 weeks.
A couple of observations...The Bourne Supremacy made half the take that F-9/11 did in just one week. I, Robot made nearly as much money as F-9/11 in less than half the time. Does anybody think F-9/11 will make what Shrek 2 made in double the time F-9/11 has been out?

In the galactic scheme of things, this crockumentary is no big deal. Does anybody think this pathetic film is going to "impact the election" as Mikey so wanted it to do?

I certainly don't take him or his movie seriously.

Terror in the Skies Update

From Heather Wilhelm via Michelle Malkin:
Nour Mehana, the "Syrian Wayne Newton," has finally hit the big time. After
days of fevered speculation, Mehana has been outed as the mysterious Syrian
music-maker who, along with his band, set Northwest Airlines Flight 327 into a
tizzy over a feared terrorist "dry run."

For many, this discovery was a massive relief. In fact, one look at Mehana's
publicity photos set many minds at ease. This man, a terrorist? A man who
sings with a goofy Syrian band, plays in shady casinos, and has a cheesy
porn-style mustache? That silly woman Annie Jacobsen! Aren't we all so silly
and paranoid?

Mr. Mehana has a nice little song on his recent CD, by the way. It's
called "Um El Shaheed."

In English, that's "Mother of a Martyr."

I noticed "Um El Shaheed" on Nour Mehana's web site. "Shaheed," I knew,
meant "martyr," but that was as far as my Arabic could go. Since
martyrdom seemed an odd topic for a casino crooner, I called the Middle East
Media Research Institute. I spoke with Aluma Dankowtiz, who is fluent in
Arabic, to find out exactly what Mr. Mehana has to say.

"Mother of a Martyr" glorifies the death of a young Palestinian. Mehana sings
to a grieving mother that she should not be sad, because her son, who died as
a martyr, is a hero. She should be happy that her son is gone, Mehana croons,
because freeing Palestine and the Golan Heights are heroic goals. The song,
which starts slow and solemn, ends with a triumphant chorus, celebrating the
martyr's glorious death: "Allahu Akbar...Allahu Akbar...Allahu Akbar!"

DeLay on Clinton

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

Source:
House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) today questioned former President Bill Clinton's credit-taking for the economic success of the 1990s and suggested the true credit for the 1990s' economic recovery belongs to President Ronald Reagan and the Republican Congress after 1995.

"If Bill Clinton created 22 million new jobs in the 1990s, then I'm the Easter Bunny," DeLay said.

"He came into office promising a tax cut and instead rammed the largest tax hike in American history through a Democrat Congress. The American people subsequently fired that Congress and installed the first Republican Congressional majority in 40 years, because those liberal policies were simply a thing of the past," DeLay said.

"The economic boom of the 1990s was the peace dividend for our victory in the Cold War, made possible by the national defense policies of Ronald Reagan, sustained by the fiscal discipline imposed by a Republican Congress, and created by the will of the American people. Mr. Clinton still thinks everything is about him, which has been the problem all along."
Stay focused guys, this is what they want...Republicans wasting time on a guy who isn't running.

Iran Update

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

From the Telegraph:
Iran has broken the seals on nuclear equipment monitored by United Nations inspectors and is once again building and testing machines that could make fissile material for nuclear weapons.

Teheran's move, revealed to The Daily Telegraph yesterday by western sources, breaks a deal with European countries under which Iran suspended "all uranium enrichment activity".

It will also exacerbate fears that the regional power is determined to make an atomic bomb within a few years.
So...anybody want to lay odds the the UN will take action? I suspect more posturing.

Anybody want to guess who will blow up Iran's facility before they finish their work?

Kerry/Edwards to "Go Dark" in August

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

From the Financial Times:
John Kerry's election team is to suspend advertising during August, opening itself to what it expects will be a barrage of attacks from the Bush-Cheney campaign.

After a debate with his senior advisers, Mr Kerry has opted to "go dark" in the weeks after the Democratic National Convention to conserve limited federal funds for the weeks immediately before the November 2 election.

The decision was a "risky step", Mary Beth Cahill, the Kerry campaign manager, acknowledged yesterday.

The Kerry campaign hopes that the convention, which opened in Boston yesterday amid boasts of unprecedented party unity and discipline, will help introduce Mr Kerry to an electorate that feels it knows little about him.
The 527s will pick up where Kerry/Edwards has left off. And they won't have near the restraint that the Kerry/Edwards team would have had to display in order to appear "moderate." This is actually a pretty smooth move for the Democrats. The 527s get to go on the attack while the Republicans have to play nice for a month.

If this strategy backfires, it will be fingered as the reason for a Kerry loss. There are many reasons why Kerry will lose this election, but this is the one that the Democrats will focus on the most. Assuming of course, it isn't close and therefore they can't cheat.

Goldberg on Kerry

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

Source:

An interesting bit from Jonah's USA Today piece that replaced the Ann Coulter bombshell:
It is difficult to find a Democrat or a liberal journalist who truly likes Kerry — and some of these people adored such human toothaches as Al Gore and Michael Dukakis. This is the unspoken secret of this convention and campaign. For more than a year, New Hampshire voters — who knew Kerry well — rejected him entirely.

It was only when Howard Dean's head exploded like one of those dudes in Scanners that they suddenly switched to Kerry because he was the most "electable," according to all of the exit polls. In other words, Democrats voted for Kerry not because they liked him, but because they thought other people would.
What sort of logic is that? Why on Earth would you pick a guy that you don't like but think others would? I just don't get that about liberals. Their hatred is so controlling that they set aside their own tastes for... Well, maybe that does make some sense after all.

Look, I admit to being a member of the Anybody But Clinton group in '96, but I did actually like Bob Dole as a person. Can anybody say the same for Kerry?

I think Jonah is right on the money when he says that there really isn't a whole lot of people who actually like Kerry, but they'll vote for him anyway out of their hatred for the President.

Doesn't make sense does it? Until you diagnose the illness that has plagued the Democratic Party: Moore's Disease. It will be interesting to see just how the medication works in controlling the urges that the likes of Howard Dean to Bush-bash. If last night is any indication, not that well. Carter and Gore both took cheap shots at the President while not mentioning his name directly. As if we aren't smart enough to figure out who they are talking about.

Same crap, different Democratic convention...

Russians to Iraq?

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

It has been reported that there is a possibility that Russia will send a large number of troops to Iraq shortly before the election. If true, this would surely end the constant whining from the lefties about the administrations ability to secure a "legitimate coalition."

Or would it?

Democrats led by John Kerry have been making this claim for quite some time and I don't think that 40,000 Russians would change their rhetoric. France is the only country that matters to the liberals, it is their Mecca.

Personally, I would welcome the Russians to Iraq just to see if it would silence the noise. With the Iraqis taking over more and more of their own security needs, are the Russians really needed in Iraq? I'm not so sure. But I welcoem them just the same.

Kerry/Edwards on Ending Lawsuit Abuse

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

Source:
Rather than engage in responsible rhetoric about ending frivilous lawsuits, the Kerry/Edwards campaign ripped Vice President Cheney for doing so. Campaign spokesman Phil Singer:
"The Bush-Cheney penchant for attack-dog politics is out of control. Dick Cheney isn't just going after Democrats, now he's going after Republicans and violating the eleventh commandment. It's time for a new administration that focuses on making America stronger at home and respected in the world, not one that takes gratuitous potshots."
What potshots is Singer talking about? The release seems to take issue with this segment of a Cheney speech:
"For the good of this economy, we also need to end lawsuit abuse. Junk and frivolous lawsuits can ruin an honest business. They put people out of work. They clog the courts, delaying justice for people with real legal grievances. It's a lot easier for America's businesses to hire new workers if they don't have to keep hiring lawyers." (Cheney Remarks, Myrtle Beach, SC, 7/26/04)
Apparently, Kerry/Edwards has a problem with this too:
"As Jim (DeMint) knows, to bring health care costs under control for families and small business owners, we need medical liability reform. Here in South Carolina and across the nation, doctors should be able to spend their time healing patients, not fighting off frivolous lawsuits." (Cheney Remarks, Myrtle Beach, SC, 7/26/04)
Now, I can understand being upset about this:
"They oppose effective reform of our legal system, and they're against medical liability reform. And we can't expect that to change, now that they've put a personal injury trial lawyer on the ticket." (Cheney Remarks, Myrtle Beach, SC, 7/26/04)
Ouch! Truth hurts.

Apparently, we're all supposed to bow down to Sen. Lindsey Graham because he opposed legislation that would put a cap on awards for medical malpractice lawsuits. Those lawsuits affect the cost of health care in a negative manner. They drive up malpractice insurance costs which are then passed on to the consumer (that's you and me).

Additionally, we're supposed to feel pity for Mel Martinez. Martinez was a member of a professional organization for lawyers that required at least one court award or settlement of $1 million or more called the Million Dollar Advocates Forum. Cry me a river already.

Gem City Journal Article

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

The Dayton Daily Democrattm opines that John Kerry should disassociate himself from Michael Moore's propaganda and the hate-filled, venemous, bile-spilling uber liberals like him.

Celebrate not, my friends, the DDN has not turned over a new leaf. They are merely doing the politically expedient thing. They know that this hyper-nauseating filth is not going to attract swing voters to their cause, so the Kerry/Edwards campaign surrogates take a knock at Moore so that the Democratic movement appears moderate and centrist. The reality is that both the DDN Editorial Board and the Kerry/Edwards campaign love Michael Moore and his movie.

TrouserGate Update

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

From Pittsburgh Live:
What was Sandy Berger up to when he "inadvertently" removed versions of a classified National Archives memo that critiqued Clinton administration intelligence and security efforts regarding the millennium celebrations? We still don't know.

But a bigger question is being posed by some of the well-sourced wags with whom we regularly converse. In fact, one says the thrust of the federal investigation now looking into Mr. Berger's actions should center not necessarily on what was taken from the archived files but what was placed in them.

Berger has acknowledged removing his handwritten notes taken during a review of classified documents. That's a violation of National Archives policy. And he says he mistakenly took the copies of the aforementioned memo, different drafts written by Bush-bashing anti-terrorism coordinator Richard A. Clarke. Some of those copies remain missing.

But a new scenario has Berger, who only took notes on an initial visit last fall, placing material -- again, related to the millennium terrorists threats -- into the files on his second and third visits.
This gets more and more curious. And those who oppose hearing are exposing their political bias. You have to keep asking yourself, what if this were Condi Rice who did this? The barbeque pit would have already been fired up...that's what would have happened.

Poles: F-9/11 is 'Propaganda'

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

From the BBC:
Michael Moore's contentious film Fahrenheit 9/11 has opened in Poland, with some film critics likening it to totalitarian propaganda.

Gazeta Wyborcza reviewer Jacek Szczerba called the film a "foul pamphlet".

He said it was too biased to be called a documentary and was similar to work by Nazi propaganda director Leni Riefenstahl.

But politicians opposed to Poland's involvement in the US-led occupation of Iraq have urged people to see the film.

"In criticising Moore, I have to admit that he has certain abilities - Leni Riefenstahl had them too," Mr Szczerba said in his review.

"Michael Moore will not convince Poles with his film," the Rzeczpospolita newspaper said in its review.
I don't think the film is on the level of Nazi propaganda. Mr. Moore is many things, but he is NOT a Nazi.

To fully understand Michael Moore, I recommend reading Michael Moore is a Big Fat Stupid White Man. My review can be found here.

Book Review: "If It's Not Close They Can't Cheat"

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

As expected, Hugh Hewitt's new book was a delight to read. It is an outstanding compliment and reinforcement of Horowitz' How to Beat the Democrats and Smith's Vast Right Wing Conspiracy Handbook. As a guide for conservatives engaging in political activism, If It's Not Close... is a God-send.

The book itself is divided into seven parts, each vitally important to the overall strategy Mr. Hewitt is promoting: The Stakes; A Brief History of Democratic Cheating; Parties; Money; Message Delivery; "Danger, Will Robinson, Danger!"; and Tone and Focus. The appendices include the full texts of several of President Bush's most important speeches; a list of the most crucial campaigns of 2004; insights into getting news from the Internet and blogs; and "The Ten Key Talking Points for 2004."

The Stakes. Mr. Hewitt provides a comprehensive analysis of what is at stake in this election. Best summed up by the title of the first chapter:
"I Don't Like You Because You're Going To Get Me Killed"
THAT is what is at stake in this election. Hugh spotlights the blocs that compose both the Democratic and Republican parties and makes clear what each faction is all about. The point is driven home that to understand John Kerry, you must first understand Howard Dean; then comparisons with President Bush become that much more straightforward and luminous. Democrats have a long history of not being trustworthy with our national security; the author outlines this indictment with an abundance of clarity and conviction.

A Brief History of Democratic Cheating. This particular section of the book was the most riveting in that these are the tales that supply the overwhelming evidence that the book's title is indeed the only way to insure the absense of chicanery after this election. The Democrats have exhibited a desire to win no matter what the cost and they have demonstrated a lack of moral fiber in their methods. We have all heard that the Democrats do not care if the 527's activites are deemed illegal and that they will gladly pay the fine if they secure the White House. This sort of deviousness should be a concern for all law-abiding Americans.

Parties. Explaining the importance and construction of our political parties and the strategies involved in securing voters is the concept illuminated in this section of the book. The author's theme of interaction between the various members of the party consituency is well documented and reasonable. Those who seek to genuinely influence others should take special notice of this section as the message is factual and appropriate.

Money. Money is the least popular, yet the most crucial part of political activism. Hugh's views on contributions are thought-provoking and legitimate. As he says in the book, give, give some more, give until it hurts, and then give some more. The amount is not important, but rather your participation is vital because every little bit DOES help in challenging the Democrats, the lunacy of the Far Left, and the 527 groups.

Message Delivery. For those of us in the blogosphere, this section offers the most useful advice. We have to know our facts. We must be accurate. We must be mindful of our tone. And we must be aware of our audience. Hugh points out that we should be deliberate in who we do business with and should support organizations that promotes a kindred temperment as our own.

"Danger, Will Robinson, Danger!" Hugh contends that winning converts ought to be the goal and that certain topics are not conducive or fruitful in an election year. Those issues are abortion, guns, and the environment; Hewitt's rationale is that in these subjects, there are insufficient quantites of undecided voters. His argument is persuasive, which is not to say that these are topics that should be put in a box and left to collect dust; but rather, should not be the focal point of any discussion with a 9/11 Democrat or other recent convert. Hugh also indicates that Immigration, Judges, Gays and God are topics that we have to be thoughtful of while engaged in debate. His assertion is correct that these are issues that should be discussed but that we must be careful with the message. Again, the objective is increasing the majority.

Tone and Focus. Essentially the conclusion to this work, this chapter reinforces the qualities of George W. Bush and the importance of his re-election. The culmination of the book is a reminder of what is at stake.

Truly an outstanding read from cover to cover. Mr. Hewitt's clarity of thought and genuineness shined throughout. This book was witty, smart, and amiable while at the same time sharp, analytical and resolute. A triumph of wisdom and substance, If It's Not Close They Can't Cheat: Crushing the Democrats in Every Election And Why Your Life Depends On It receives the WMD seal of approval and my personal recommendation.

Battleground Ohio Update

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

There is a poll out that I've not heard a lot about but is good news for the President. Bush/Cheney has a 5 point lead in Ohio with this poll of 801 likely Ohio voters.
If the 2004 presidential election were held today, would you vote for George W. Bush and Dick Cheney, the Republicans, John Kerry and John Edwards, the Democrats, or Ralph Nader and Peter Camejo, the independents?

Bush / Cheney (R)- 48%

Kerry / Edwards (D)- 43%

Nader / Camejo (I) - 1%

Undecided - 8%
Now, I'm not a big fan of polls this early; but I am encouraged by these results.

There is still plenty of work to be done though, as these results also show us. 8% of Ohioans are still undecided and with a 3 point margin of error, this could still get ugly.

Keep the faith, folks, and keep on supporting the President!

Hat Tip

Rob Bernard was all over this one.

Original (7/21 8:59PM) Post:

Source:
When political pundits started touting Ohio as the key battleground state in the presidential election, University of Dayton political scientist Nancy Martorano shrugged it off as hype.

Today, Ohio has become the new Florida. It's a must-win state for either candidate, but particularly George W. Bush. No Republican has ever won the presidency without Ohio. Only two Democrats -- Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy -- have won the presidential election without Ohio. Ohio holds 20 electoral votes. In 2000, Bush won the state by less than 4 percentage points.

"It's going to be tight. If Kerry and Edwards can pull it off, they'll squeak it out," predicts Martorano, assistant professor of political science. "It's going to come down to turnout. Whichever side can turn out the votes will win."

In general, Ohio is Bush country, but the loss of more than 200,000 jobs in the state since Bush took office may change the tide, according to Martorano. "Bush controls the state. The only chance Kerry has is in the urban areas. Kerry will probably safely carry the Cleveland/Akron area. That's the strongest Democratic stronghold in the state. Cincinnati is Republican. Columbus is a toss-up, and the Dayton area will be a fight, especially in some of the wealthy suburbs. That could tip it Republican."

Matt's Chat

Reasonable analysis so far. I concur that Ohio is, for the most part, Bush country and that it is essentially his race to lose.

She identifies the two key issues: jobs and terrorism.

On the jobs front, I will again remind my fellow Ohioans that the President has helped us out quite a bit but our RINO governor and our legislature need to get on board. If the President loses Ohio and thus the re-election it will be because of Bob "Tax" Taft.

She doesn't seem to have an answer on the terrorism front. I can't say I blame her actually...this is a tough one to call. Here's the thing: what will matter is not whether or not we're attacked between now and the election, but rather which candidate is more serious about national security and homeland security. While the President does have some weaknesses on the homeland security front, only the rabid partisan will argue against the President on national security. While the world is not yet safe, we are all definately safer than we were before and that counts.

Another topic that the professor brings up is "presidential election fatigue" which I do think has some merit, especially in Ohio. You have to be a pretty serious political junkie (like me!) to really have the stamina for a two year presidential race. And the President has been under assault his entire Presidency, so the Republicans in this state are pretty fed up with the nonsense. The mainstream (read radical) Democrats have been infected with Moore's Disease (thanks Hugh!) and have become totally unhinged (which is a national trend that has carried over in to Ohio).

She doesn't address the legal team that the Democrats have assembled to attack the use of electronic voting machines. We're looking at Florida 2000 all over again unless it is a blowout.

If you didn't know it before, my fellow Buckeyes, know it now: this is the big one and we're in the thick of it.

NARAL Out-Parties Kerry/Edwards

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

Source:
Previously on WMD, we reported that Kerry/Edwards hosted 250 house parties for women. Looks like NARAL has more support than Kerry/Edwards. What does THAT say about this ticket?
NARAL Pro-Choice America's convention-week efforts are not, however, limited to the host city. Pro-choice activists throughout the country will be participating through house parties and online activities that connect them to the goings-on in Boston. Thursday night will see more than 536 pro-choice house parties in all 50 states across the country. And members of NARAL's Choice Action Network have submitted more than 3400 "Delegram" messages to delegates, thanking them for all they're doing to further the pro-choice cause.
It tells me that that Kerry/Edwards is sinking...fast... Don't believe the hype, people, Hugh Hewitt is right: If It It's Not Close, They Can't Cheat. And it is looking more and more as if it won't be all that close.

Kerry/Edwards on Education and Service

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

Source:
The Kerry/Edwards camp released their plan for creating a "New Army of Patriots" which is a service-oriented program that would compensate "volunteers" with college tuition.

The good news is that he tells us how to he plans to pay for it. The bad news is that there is no way it will work.
John Kerry believes that service should be a graduation requirement. He believes that knowledge of the rights and responsibilities of citizenship - including the duty to serve your community - are as important to American adults as knowing how to read and do math. Under the Kerry-Edwards plan, states and local communities will design their own service requirements to make the requirement significant and meaningful without becoming onerous. Kerry and Edwards understand that young people have many obligations and recognize that a service requirement should not be too onerous or unrealistic for students to meet. Maryland, as well as numerous school districts around the country already have such a requirement and have had great results. A Kerry-Edwards Administration will provide funding for schools that choose to require community service as a condition of high school graduation.

Every penny paid for, with money to spare. John Kerry's plan requires roughly $13 billion in new resources over 10 years and is paid for by his new initiative to eliminate the subsidized and guaranteed profits for banks making student loans. Today, bank profits are set in statutes written by lobbyists. John Kerry will require banks to bid in an open auction for the business of student loans. He will take billions that now pad banks' earnings, and instead direct those resources to young people who want to serve America and pay for college, with money left for other service and education initiatives.
Kerry plans to pay for this program by punishing the banks that make student loans possible.

Furthermore, this plan endangers American jobs in the banking industry. If banks aren't making money, they are going to lay people off. I'm sure Kerry/Edwards will blame that on the bank, but the reality is that you have to make money in order to spend money on employees.

If Kerry values service so much, why not promote real volunteering? That would actually make more sense. Volunteering doesn't cost anything to the taxpayer and the work that needed to be done would get done. I mean, if all those liberals would show us some deeds (volunteering - you know, for free) to go along with their faith (in government), I'd be more inclined to support some of these ideas.

This is just another potential money pit in the federal beauracracy with a fancy name.

Another Terror in the Skies Update

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

From Michelle Malkin:

WNBC investigative reporter Scott Weinberger reported on Joe Scarborough's MSNBC show tonight that the 14 Syrians on Northwest Flight 327 ALL had expired visas. He said his sources told him that law enforcement officials xeroxed the men's paperwork without looking at the dates. The visas had expired nearly a month earlier, according to Weinberger.

This does not give me much confidence in the background checks that the Joint Terrorism Task Force, FBI, and LAPD may or may not have conducted on the men before letting them walk away. Would you trust the terrorism investigation of officials who apparently neglected to verify whether these men--coming from a designated state sponsor of terrorism, flying on a day on which Department of Homeland Security officials had issued a warning about a possible terrorist attack--WERE EVEN IN THE COUNTRY LEGALLY?!?!?!

If Weinberger's reporting is accurate, I won't be surprised. The 14 men join a club of at least an estimated 2.3 million illegal visa overstayers currently living in the U.S. today.

The Challenge Issued

From WorldNetDaily:
Two lesbians filed the first lawsuit in the nation to force the federal government and other states to recognize same-sex marriages performed in Massachusetts.

Rev. Nancy Wilson and Paula Schoenwether, who traveled to Provincetown, Mass., in May to get married, are now seeking recognition of their license in Florida. They claim exclusion of homosexual couples violates the U.S. Constitution's right to equal protection under the law and the implicit "right to privacy."

Seven years ago, however, the Florida Legislature, like many throughout the nation, passed a law defining marriage as a bond between one man and one woman.

The suit also is a challenge to the federal Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, which says no state is required to recognize "a relationship between persons of the same sex that is treated as a marriage under the laws of such other state, territory, possession, or tribe, or a right or claim arising from such relationship."

Mat Staver, who drafted Florida's Defense of Marriage Act, says the effect of the decision by four of the seven Massachusetts judges last November now is spreading to other states.

Matt's Chat

The radicals didn't leave well enough alone.

The President may be right. In order for states to have the right to say 'no' to these activists, a Constitutional amendment may be in order...

The Edwards Legacy

From WBIR-TV:
The Tennessee Court of Appeals has reinstated a lawsuit against a gas station filed by two victims of drunken driving.

The court ruled Gary West and Michell Richardson could sue East Tennessee Pioneer Oil Company for negligence.

An investigation concluded that employees of a Knoxville Exxon station operated by Pioneer refused to sell Brian Lee Tarver beer because he was intoxicated, but helped him pump fuel into his car.

Police say Tarver left the station with his lights off, driving in the wrong lane and crashed head-on into the car carrying West and Richardson in July, 2000.

A Knox County court had dismissed the suit, ruling neither the company nor its employees controlled Tarver's actions.

The appeals court ruled what the station employees "set into a motion a force involving an unreasonable risk of harm to others."

International Man of Mystery Update

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

Drudge Flash - John Edwards on Larry King:
"Just a few weeks ago...I was in Brussels at NATO meeting with a whole group of NATO ambassadors and hearing their perspective on this. I just believe that these countries around the world, whose cooperation and alliances we need, believe that in order for them to have a fresh start with America, we're going to need a new president to do that. Now, they're not going to want to say this very vocally, of course, but the reality is that in order for us to reestablish old relations and to establish new relationships, I believe we need a new president.
...
"They didn't say that directly. What they said was they're very frustrated with the way this administration has dealt with them. They believe that in this case our trans-Atlantic relationships are important, should be important to America, are important to them. They want to be treated with some level of respect.

"They understand, because I made it very clear, at the end of the day, the president of the United States is going to do what's in the best interest of the American people. But the vast majority of the time, our interests are aligned with the interests of our allies around the world."

Kerry/Edwards on Fighting Terrorism

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

Source:
Fascinating stuff from Kerry/Edwards today.
Destroy and Disrupt Terrorist Networks. John Kerry and John Edwards will use direct military action when necessary to disrupt and destroy terrorist networks. Under John Kerry's leadership, American military operations will be precise and deadly. Kerry and Edwards will cut off the flow of terrorist funds by strengthening our anti-money laundering laws and imposing tough financial sanctions against nations or banks that fail to act against money laundering. And they will shut out of the U.S. financial system any nations that fail to respond.
This sounds a bit like Kerry/Edwards is back to calling the War on Terror a law enforcement issue. Don't get me wrong, eliminating the financial network is a big part of winning this war but mentioning the legal strategy in the same paragraph with the military option is not a good sign. Destroy and Disrupt is a good idea, but I think the American people deserve a bit more substance than a fancy slogan and a soundbite.
Keep WMD Out of Terrorist Hands. John Kerry and John Edwards will launch a new initiative to prevent the world's deadliest weapons from falling into the world's most dangerous hands. They have a plan to secure vulnerable bomb-making materials, prevent the production of new materials for nuclear weapons, and work to end nuclear weapons programs in hostile states like North Korea and Iran.
A new initiative? Well, let's hear it! Who has signed on to it? What is it all about? Who is going to pay for it? How are Kerry/Edwards going to secure bomb-making materials? How are they going to prevent the production of new nukes? And what kind of work are they talking about when it comes to ending the nuke programs in North Korea and Iran? These statements end up asking more questions than they answer...
Prevent New Terrorist Havens. John Kerry and John Edwards will work with our allies and the international community to stabilize and secure Iraq and Afghanistan to ensure that these newly freed nations and other weak states around the world do not become havens for terrorists.
Kerry/Edwards will bow to the United Nations, France, Germany, and Russia. But especially the UN and France. Kerry/Edwards is under the false impression that the UN has a successful peacekeeping record. They do not. And France is not interested in doing anything that involves the United States. France won't even support sanctions against Sudan while a genocide is going on because the US supports it.
Prevent Recruitment of New Terrorists. John Kerry and John Edwards will work to win the war of ideas and the future of a young generation with a strategy to break down economic and cultural isolation in Arab and Muslim countries and support local efforts to promote democracy, trade, tolerance, and respect for human rights. The strategy includes a major initiative in public diplomacy and an international effort to improve education.
This is just laughable. Kerry/Edwards thinks a handout will make the terrorists go away. How typically uber-liberal. This isn't about cash or schooling; they want us DEAD.

Maybe Kerry/Edwards can impress me with their ideas to transform the military and intelligence services to meet today's threats:
Transform the Military. John Kerry and John Edwards will transform the world's most powerful military to better address the modern threats of terrorism and nuclear, biological and chemical weapons, while ensuring that we have enough properly trained and equipped troops to meet our strategic and regional missions. To accomplish this, they will: (1) expand our active duty forces by 40,000 soldiers, (2) double America's Special Forces capability and increase other specialized personnel, (3) complete the process of technological transformation, and (4) redirect the National Guard for homeland security.
I'm actually impressed with these ideas. (1) I'm not real sure that we need an additional 40,000 soldiers, but I'll leave that to the milbloggers to sort out. I'd like to know how he plans to pay for it though. (2) I do think our Special Forces capabilities could use reenforcement. I'd be curious to know just what exactly he is proposing. And how he plans to pay for it. (3) "Technological transformation" kind of sounds like new weapons programs. Kind of like the ones John Kerry has spent most of his Senate career voting down... (4) I fully support redirecting the National Guard to Homeland Security functions provided we have sufficient force projection throughout all theatres of operation. The only we Kerry/Edwards could do this is if they got the 40,000 mentioned earlier. Question: what sort of mission would the National Guard have in homeland security? Border patrol? Immigration enforcement? Don't we have these missions covered by other agencies? Do we really want the military taking these functions over? Who pays for it all?
Reform National Intelligence Services. John Kerry and John Edwards will reform our intelligence services so we can get the critical information we need to defeat the terrorists and prevent another attack. They will create a cabinet-level Director of National Intelligence to strengthen the leadership and accountability of our intelligence community. They will reorganize the community into issue-oriented task forces based on the threats we face to maximize coordination and integration and ensure that all available resources are brought to bear on the most pressing threats. John Kerry and John Edwards will ensure we have more people with the right training and resources on the ground around the world, including by more than doubling the number of personnel on our clandestine services, so that we are getting the intelligence we need to win the war on terror. And to ensure that we are fully prepared to conduct vital counter-terrorism operations at home, they will make certain that a fully separate professional track for domestic intelligence is created within the FBI.
The Acting Director of the CIA says we do not need a cabinet-level intelligence position. He seems to think that would add an unneccessary layer of beauracracy. I'm not real sure that I agree with him, but I'd like to hear more about why Kerry/Edwards would disagree with an intelligence professional. (I'm sure they'll cite the 9/11 Commission...and I'm not real sure I agree with them either.) "Increasing the personnel" sure doesn't sound like trying to eliminate the CIA that Kerry's Senate record reflects. Why the change of heart? "Domestic intelligence within the FBI"...but what about Gorelick's Wall and the legal ramifications of a law enforcement agency engaging in intelligence operations? And how are they going to pay for it?

How about homeland security?

Better Coordinate and Integrate with Local Law Enforcement. To better coordinate with local law enforcement, John Kerry and John Edwards will establish 24-hour operations centers in every state to give law enforcement personnel immediate access to watch lists and other intelligence from federal databases, and break down the bureaucratic barriers that prevent vital information- sharing -- including granting security clearances to local officials where appropriate. They will ensure that we have a single integrated and effective federal watch list that is readily accessible all across the country so that the intelligence we need to protect our homeland never again slips through the cracks.
Wouldn't it be easier to have access to watch lists and whatnot via the Intenet? Information could be continuously updated and maintained centrally. I could be mistaken, but don't we already do this? And again, Kerry/Edwards doesn't tell us how they are going to pay for all these centers and personnel, but wishes will keep us safe...or so they'd have us believe.
Improve Border Security. John Kerry and John Edwards will improve security at our borders, seaports, and airports. They will improve the detection equipment in our shipping systems, ensure that private companies obtain adequate information about items they are shipping, and work with other nations to increase inspections of seaborne cargo. Kerry and Edwards will adopt tighter controls on air cargo, increase perimeter inspections at airports at home and abroad, work with our neighbors to strengthen border controls, and use better technology and more personnel to improve inspections while speeding up commerce.
It's great that they are thinking along these lines, but who isn't? Tell us how you are going to do it and how you are going to pay for it. Otherwise, you're not telling us we need to know. What about immigration policy? Will Kerry/Edwards make any changes there?
Harden Targets: John Kerry and John Edwards will launch a major effort to harden our critical infrastructure and most vulnerable targets - from chemical and nuclear plants to rails, tunnels and key cyber networks. Kerry and Edwards will require new security standards at chemical plants, including more guards, better fencing, and use of less dangerous chemicals where possible. They will improve railroad and subway security by providing biological and chemical agent detectors.
Same questions. This stuff is rather vague and there isn't any indication of how Kerry/Edwards would pay for all of this.
Domestic Readiness: John Kerry and John Edwards will make sure first-responders have the training and equipment to respond to any attack with all the speed, skill, and strength required. A Kerry Edwards administration will modernize our emergency warning system to provide localized warnings and provide assistance to police and fire departments to end severe and growing shortages in manpower, training, and equipment. And they will ensure that complying with the requirements of our national alert system does not impose an unfair financial burden on state and local authorities. They will protect America against bioterrorism by putting one person in charge of the national response strategy, working with state and local leaders to increase local preparedness, revitalizing our public health system, and encouraging anti-bioterrorism research.
Okay. This is starting to get a bit annoying. Can't this campaign tell us anything about the funding for these projects? Words are nice, but if there isn't a plan to pay for this stuff, the only reason to talk about it is to mislead the American people in to thinking that Kerry/Edwards will be able to accomplish something they can't deliver.
Guarding Liberty: John Kerry and John Edwards understand that terrorists do not just target our lives; they target our way of life. A Kerry Edwards administration will be on constant guard not to sacrifice the freedom we are fighting to protect. They will strengthen some portions of the Patriot Act, like the restrictions on money laundering, but change the portions of the Patriot Act that threaten individual rights, such as the library provisions. A Kerry Edwards administration will believe in an America where freedom is what we fight for - not what we give up.
The Patriot Act has NOT been abused. There is judicial review built in. If knowing what a potential terrorist checked out at the library will help catch this guy before he acts, then I'm all for it. If Kerry/Edwards isn't...well, I think that speaks for itself doesn't it?

250 More Down

From Yahoo News:
Iraq - U.S. Marines killed 25 insurgents and captured 25 others during fierce fighting in Ramadi, a hotbed of the insurgency against U.S. and Iraqi forces, the American military said Thursday. A decapitated body, meanwhile, was found on the banks of the Tigris River in northern Iraq.

The gruesome discovery was made Wednesday, the same day militants announced they had abducted three Kenyans, three Indians and an Egyptian and would behead one every 72 hours starting Saturday if their countries did not announce intentions to withdraw troops and citizens from Iraq. The Kenyan government on Thursday urged all its citizens to leave Iraq immediately.

The fighting Wednesday in Ramadi, 70 miles west of Baghdad, wounded 14 U.S. servicemen, but none of the injuries was life-threatening, and 10 returned to duty, the Marines said.
...
In Baghdad, insurgents fought U.S. soldiers on Haifa Street, the scene of a shootout earlier this month, an unidentified hospital official told Associated Press Television News. Two Iraqis were reported wounded.

Interior Ministry official Sabah Khadum said Iraqi police and intelligence forces arrested 200 people, including several "non-Iraqi Arabs," in the Haifa Street operation and discovered a huge cache of weapons. U.S. and Iraqi officials have long complained that fighters from neighboring countries are battling coalition forces.

Our boys got some today! Hoorah! This is why you don't capitulate to terrorists. In the long run, you will win. Terrorism is the tactics of the desperate.

Kerry on 9/11 Report

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

I'll give John Kerry due props for this one... This is the most definitive statement I have ever heard from this campaign.

I don't know how much of it I believe...but he said the right things.

Dayton Daily Democrat on TrouserGate

By Matt Hurley for the TIB Network:

Editorial from the Dayton Daily News:
The flap over Sandy Berger is an example of just how ugly the presidential election is in danger of getting.
This is no "flap" (relevant definition: A blow given with something flat; a slap.) but rather a very serious crime. This presidential race was ugly, as you call it, a long time ago. I recall it getting "ugly" prior to the Democratic primaries. In fact, it's been "ugly" since the President won Florida...even with recount after recount after recount after recount.
Mr. Berger, the national security adviser for President Bill Clinton, has messed up. At least.
IS that supposed to reassure us? Whew! At least it wasn't one of John Kerry's advisors! I hate to break it to you, the recently "informal" advisor to Mr. Kerry used to be called a "top" advisor to John Kerry. And yes, he "messed up" alright. He committed a crime. One that he has admitted to committing when he said he "knowingly" took some documents and "inadvertantly" took others.
At the request of the official commission investigating 9/11, he was poring over some classified documents. He left the National Archives with some of them. He can’t do that. They are supposed to remain in a secure area, lest they fall into the hands of the nation’s enemies. He knew that. He says he didn’t mean to take the documents.
Mr. Berger was not requested to steal documents by the 9/11 Commission. Perhaps President Clinton can shed some light on this: What did HE know and when did he know it.
Some of them still haven’t turned up.
And that would be a problem now wouldn't it...
Now the Republicans are calling for an investigation. That’s appropriate. But they’ve gone beyond that. They have gone to the point of having a cow.
You've got to ask yourself what this article would be about had Condi Rice stolen documents from the National Archive... Having a cow? You betcha!
House Speaker Dennis Hastert, once a relatively restrained voice in politics, but lately determined to show that he can sling mud with the worst, said "What information could be so embarrassing that a man with decades of experience in handling classified documents would risk being caught pilfering our nation’s most sensitive secrets (Mr. Berger) was given access to these documents to assist the 9/11 commission, not hide information from them."
I was not too impressed with Speaker Hastert prior to his leadership on this issue. He was a "relatively restrained voice" because the Democrats were able to walk all over him. Now that he's had enough, he's "slinging mud with the best of them"? I say it is about time.
From that, you would never know that no authority is accusing Mr. Berger of trying to hide any information, much less pilfering secrets. He had legal access to the secrets. And the documents in question were just copies. The 9/11 commission has them, and it is not raising a complaint with Mr. Berger.
Copies with handwritten notes on them become more than "just copies" they are seperate documents that may shed light on some things. It is true that he had legal access to the secrets; but he did not have legal authority to remove the secrets from the National archive "knowingly" or "inadvertantly."
Republican Majority Leader Tom DeLay called the Berger incident "a third-rate burglary," invoking Watergate rhetoric.
Like no Democrat has done THAT lately...
"This is not sloppy," he said. "I think it is gravely, gravely serious what he did, if he did it, and it could be a national security crisis."
And the Majority Leader would be correct on this point. We need to know what he took, who he gave information to and what he did with it.
Now the right-wing warriors in the media and elsewhere are sending out frantic messages to their troops, stating as facts allegations that Mr. Berger denies (about stuffing documents in his clothes).
The fact is, he got the classified documents out. I don't really care much whether he stuffed his socks or not. This is merely a deploy the smoke screen tactic in order to change the subject. This man committed a serious crime. Just because he has a D after his name doesn't mean a whole lot to me.
Meanwhile, Democrats are pointing out that the Berger incident actually happened last fall and an investigation was begun then. They say the Republicans raise it now to distract attention from the report of the 9/11 commission that’s out this week, and from the Democrats’ upcoming convention.
Which just goes to show that it is in fact a Democratic leak timed so that with the upcoming convention the story could be swept under the run as quickly as possible. If it were a Republican leak, they would have saved it for an "October Surprise" that you liberals keep waiting for...
This whole flap would hardly be worth pausing over — at least in the absence of some new information suggesting a bigger security problem — if not for what it says about the presidential campaign. It seems to be a harbinger.
Again, this is not a "flap" but a rather serious criminal act that is worthy of doing a LOT more than just pausing over. Ask yourself again what this editorial would be about if it had been Condi Rice who had done this. Harbinger indeed...
Really, though, it’s hard to see what the two parties get at this stage out of getting too far down and dirty. Why should they spin passing events so egregiously that nobody will be impressed except the people who are already on board with them?
Good question for the Anybody But Bush crowd, the MoveOn.org 527s, and Moore's Disease infected Ted Rall wing of the Democratic Party that has hijacked the loyal opposition in this country.
The usual purpose of such work is to fire up the troops, to get your side so hopping mad that it gets to work. But this year that’s the last thing that’s necessary. If people start hopping any higher they will soon get above the pull of gravity and will be gone forever.
And who would be responsible for whipping people up in to such a frothy frenzy... I blame the Anybody But Bush crowd, the MoveOn.org 527s, and Moore's Disease infected Ted Rall wing of the Democratic Party that has hijacked the loyal opposition in this country.
Given that the riling up is not necessary, the politicians have the opportunity to conserve their own dignity. Whether that means anything to them remains to be seen.
Democrats aren't interested in dignity...they are after power. Nothing else matters to them. Nothing.
