As I said on Facebook; outside of Democrats, I can't think of an organization more at odds with the Tea Party movement than the NRSC, but here they are making a pitch using Gadsden flags (at this link -- who knows how long it will be there, my guess is not long) and Tea Party rhetoric (in the bumper sticker featured to the left).
These people actually expect Tea Party voters to forget that the NRSC backed Lisa Murkowski in Alaska, Charlie Crist in Florida and Mike Castle in Delaware. Good luck with that!
All of this is reminiscent of the whole fake Tea Party Values logo that our friends in the Ohio Republican Party and the State Central Committee tried to confuse primary voters with earlier this year. I keep hearing from the 527 Media and liberal blogs (but I repeat myself) how the Tea Party is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Republican Party, but the truth is that the GOP is doing everything it can to latch on to this popular movement because they think it will help them win. That's it. Nothing more. They don't care about real Tea Party values and their default position is to support any Republican who isn't a conservative.
Special Thanks to a Friend of the Show for the bumper sticker graphic at the top of this post.
PolitiFact Ohio asked Yost’s campaign to back up the claim. It pointed to legislation Pepper sponsored as a city councilman in 2002 that called on Cincinnati to begin collecting income taxes from visiting professional athletes and entertainers. The motion passed and Cincinnati began collecting the tax.
Pepper, now a county commissioner in Cincinnati’s Hamilton County, denies responsibility for imposing the tax. Pepper instead blamed state lawmakers who included the jock tax in a comprehensive municipal tax bill passed in 2000. Pepper said that bill, HB 483, forced cities to tax those athletes’ earnings.
We took a closer look at HB 483 and found a provision that prohibits cities from taxing the income of anyone who works in a city for 12 or fewer days in a calendar year. An exception to that rule, however, is "a professional entertainer or professional athlete … as may be reasonably defined by the municipal corporation," the bill reads. That means an Ohio city can tax a professional athlete’s pay, no matter how many days he works there. (The provision originally was part of another bill that passed in 2000, HB 477, but was thrown into HB 483 for technical reasons.)
While Pepper argued state law requires Cincinnati to collect the jock tax, experts we talked to said the 2000 state law placed Cincinnati under no obligation to do so.
What makes this double-plus fun is that Pepper has been blaming everybody ELSE for HIS vote. Once again, an Ohio Democrat is not taking responsibility for his actions...I am shocked -- SHOCKED -- to find gambling in this establishment.
Release: Berea, OH—Community organizer Matt Patten’s patently false smear campaign on U.S. Navy veteran and small business owner Mike Dovilla continued unabated this week with ongoing charges of a “dangerous plan” to slash Ohio’s state budget by 40 percent. The latest piece of mail to reach residents in the 18th Ohio House District accused Dovilla of seeking to “slash funding to schools and force the layoffs of thousands of teachers.” The fact is Mike Dovilla has no such plan to balance the state’s budget on the backs of Ohio’s educators, libraries or other children’s services. “Matt Patten and his party bosses in Columbus are again engaging in unethical behavior, working feverishly to tie me to some mysterious plan I didn’t write and know nothing about,” said Dovilla. “If they would simply visit my website and read The Dovilla Plan to Get Ohio Working, they would see my actual blueprint to get our state back on the right track.” “Renewing our commitment to world-class education is one of the key components of The Dovilla Plan,” continued Dovilla, a graduate of Berea High School who went on to earn degrees from Baldwin-Wallace College and American University. “I am proud of the many current and retired public school teachers – Democrats, Republicans and Independents – who support my candidacy for the legislature and will do everything in my power to ensure that our teachers, administrators, parents and students have the resources to compete in today’s increasingly global economy.” A native of Berea and resident of his hometown for more than 23 years, Mike Dovilla is running for the legislature to Get Ohio Working by creating a business-friendly environment that will create jobs, promote economic development, and retain our state’s talented residents. The 18th District is composed of Berea, North Royalton, Olmsted Falls, Olmsted Township, and Strongsville.
Rob Portman finally reaches the magic number of 50% in a race that should have been a no contest for months. Team Portman is making the right arguments so I think it is coming down to who the voters believe more and so far it looks like Portman is winning that particular race. Fisher has run an absolutely awful race and Portman still looks to going for the tiara in this beauty contest.
Kasich has led this race all year long and the favorable numbers tell a similar story. Kasich is liked by more folks and not liked by fewer numbers with more people not sure what to think about Kasich than Strickland. Basically, there aren't enough voters who haven't made up their mind what they think about these two candidates to make that significant of a change in the numbers.
This is still a tight race and anything can happen on E-Day, but if I'm Team Kasich I have to feel pretty good about the likely outcome...
Back in late August, Republican leader, my Congressman and a Great American -- John Boehner -- (also known as the Right Knight of Congress) gave a speech in Cleveland (of all places) in which he suggested that President Obama ought to fire his economic team. (CBS: "Boehner to Obama: Fire Your Economic Team") This speech was so devastating that the President travelled to Cleveland (of all places) himself to deliver what was billed as a retort. (Politico: "Cleveland speech billed as retort") For all intents and purposes, the President's strategy backfired and the White House elevated the profile of the man who is most likely to be the next Speaker of the House. (CBS: "John Boehner Enjoys White House Spotlight")
What was the main talking point from the Boehner speech? That Obama should fire his economic advisers. (The Hill: "Obama should fire his economic advisors -- Rep. John Boehner")In the last month, news has trickled out that Obama's economic advisers are indeed leaving.
Larry Summers -- AP: "Obama aide's exit could be prelude to more changes" -- Director of the National Economic Council
Christina Romer -- WSJ: "Leaving the Administration" -- Council of Economic Advisers
Peter Orszag -- Washington Post: "Orszag to resign as White House budget director, source says" -- White House budget director
Herb Allison -- WSJ: "Leaving the Administration" -- Assistant Secretary at Department of Treasury
Steve Ratner -- WSJ: "Leaving the Administration" -- "Car Czar"
Of course, the chief architect of the Summer of Recovery, Treasury Secretary Tim "Turbo Tax" Geithner still has a job, but that's only a matter of time.
This interview caused alternating feelings of outrage and amazement. This woman would benefit from some family who cares and a good lesson in American civics. She wants something for nothing and rationalizes her way to believing that she has a "right" to whatever she can get her hands on...all without contributing a dime to the very system that has sustained her. She feels absolutely no obligation to pitch in at all... This is why Obama ultimately fails because not all of America's CITIZENS, let alone illegal aliens, are treated this way.
Matt Lewis wrote a very interesting and somewhat controversial piece for Politics Daily that is well worth reading the whole thing because he gets a number of things exactly right. There are, however, a few things that I take umbrage with in the article. His piece is a listing of things that "conservatives" should be careful about in regards to the Tea Party. Let's take a look at some of the things we disagree about...
1. Lack of reverence for conservative leaders and organizations. It has been my observation that many of today's new activists are quick to conflate being "old" with being part the establishment. This is probably natural, but it is not always helpful. To be sure, many conservative movement leaders have become corrupted or co-opted. But many of the movement's respected leaders joined the conservative fight when it was not popular or profitable to do so, and have nobly dedicated their lives to this cause. This should be honored, not dismissed. A tenet of Burkean conservatism is respect for tradition and accumulated wisdom. Conservatives would be foolish to abandon the wisdom of elders, much less eschew the infrastructure that has been created over recent decades, merely because it existed prior to 2010.
This is total rubbish from top to bottom. Tea Partiers aren't liberal or conservative so classifying whether or not one gets on bended knee and bows to the appropriate conservative icon or institution is too silly to even write any more on the subject.
2. A move away from social conservatism. Just as the rise of Christian conservatives in the late 1970s and 1980s profoundly changed the conservative movement, the tea party has the potential to change the movement once again, possibly making it more libertarian. While many tea party members are full-spectrum conservatives, it's fair to say that government spending and the failed economy are the galvanizing forces behind the movement. As such, it's fair to conclude that an influx of activists concerned primarily about fiscal issues might result in changing attitudes within the conservative movement. This could be good or bad (depending on your views), but it is a phenomenon worth considering.
While I think Lewis and I agree on the general point that welcoming Tea Partiers in to the conservative fold can be both good and bad for conservatism AND the Tea Party, I really don't think castigating fiscal conservatives as some sort of "less than holy" entity is what got the conservative movement in general and the Republican Party specifically, in to the particular mess we have found ourselves. Nothing infuriates me more than listening to some "conservative" drone on and on about how abortion is the only litmus test that matters. The same thing could be said of our friends in the Second Amendment community. Basically, what I am getting at here, is that a conservative is going to be a combination of a number of philosophies and ideas and not all of them are required (although, a wandering off on some number of these positions is a legitimate cause for concern) but Tea Partiers aren't going to shake the very foundations of conservatism. It is what it is and it always will be...
3. Anti-Intellectualism. Unlike liberalism, which began as a patchwork of disparate interest groups seeking power, conservatism began as a coherent intellectual philosophy. But in recent decades, conservatives have mocked "pointy-headed liberal intellectuals," creating an impression that intelligence is almost something to be skeptical of. While I am certainly not advocating elitism, I would strongly encourage conservatives to reject populism. Conservative candidates who can eloquently advocate for conservative positions have a better chance of impacting the culture than do demagogues who cannot effectively communicate their philosophy to the masses.
This is just more of Lewis' #1 point and it is just as absurd. Again, conservatism isn't about elitism. The intellectuals, BY DEFINITION (noun -- a person of superior intellect.) think they are smarter than everybody else and that isn't the brand of conservatism I care to practice. While I find Lewis' point on eloquence to be interesting, I don't see its relevance to the discussion at hand...unless he's suggesting that Tea Partiers are incapable of putting two thoughts together in a coherent way.
Lewis' last two points on Purges and The Victim Card are not ones I take offense to, so I'll leave those to others to dissect. Read the whole thing here.

A staunch conservative who served in the United States Senate and as Chairman of the Republican National Committee. This Ohio Republican actually thought Teddy Roosevelt was crazy and believed that he shouldn't have been selected for Vice President saying, "Don't any of you realize there's only one life between that madman and the presidency?"
My favorite Hanna quote: "There are two things that are important in politics. The first is money and I can't remember what the second one is".
We had Mike Wilson on the TIB All Stars Show awhile back and now the Cincinnati Enquirer has a story on Mike's principled stand against double-dipping. Retired ought to mean retired. Just another reason why the 28th District ought to send him to the Ohio House.

Two weeks ago, I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical about the soon-to-be released "Pledge to America" document from Congressional Republicans. As one of the most conservative Republicans in Congress, my concern was that the document would not be bold enough to address the economic and moral challenges facing America.
Having now read the document, I can tell you that I am pleasantly surprised!
It lays out a series of principles (low taxes, limited spending, strong national defense, and traditional American values) that I believe are necessary to get America back on the right track.
It appropriately focuses on job creation, but does not rely on more of the big new spending programs that have failed to create jobs over the past two years. Nor does it seek to help the economy recover by creating more public sector (government) jobs. Rather, it calls for reducing non-defense federal spending to pre-stimulus, pre-bailout levels, so we can begin to work towards balancing the budget and paying down the national debt.
It also details legislation to give small business owners and private sector job creators what they desire most right now: certainty. Job creators will tell you the biggest factor that is holding back private sector economic growth is that, simply put, they don't know what the federal government is going to do next. Here are some quick examples of what I mean:
The tax cuts of 2001 are set to expire at the end of this year. Will Congress extend them or allow them to expire? That decision will affect the bottom line of most small business owners for years, and they need to know Congress' answer before they decide if they can hire people back or not.
Will Congress pass the cap-and-trade bill during the post-election "lame duck" session? If they do, energy prices in Ohio will likely double, dramatically increasing the cost of doing business and hurting their ability to hire new workers.
Though the health care takeover bill has already passed, most small business owners are still trying to figure out exactly how much more the new mandates in the bill will cost them, from higher health care costs to new requirements like the one that forces businesses to report to the IRS (on Form 1099) everyone they do more than $600 dollars worth of business with during the year.
There are other seemingly minor, but significant changes included, such as the pledge to cut the budgets of Congressional offices - an idea that is long overdue! This will force Members of Congress to be first in line in accepting the "sacrifice" of government spending cuts.
Perhaps most importantly, the document also specifically lays out the value of promoting a Pro-Life agenda in Congress, beginning with repealing the Obama-Pelosi language in the health care law that allows for taxpayer funding of abortion, and never allowing taxpayer money to take the life of an unborn child again.
Other parts of the document speak for itself, like the following quote from the preamble "...we pledge to honor families, traditional marriage, life, and the private and faith-based organizations that form the core of our American values."
I often say that of the three big challenges facing America today (economic uncertainty, the terrorist threat, and the battle for the culture), that we need to win the "battle for the culture" if we are going to have the resiliency to beat back the other two challenges!
Do I think this is a perfect document? Of course not! But I do think it is a dramatic step in the right direction.
I have been critical of both Republicans and Democrats when they promote policies that tax too much, spend too much, fail to prioritize the security of our nation, and fail to promote the traditional American values that made our country great.
Despite the overspending of Congressional Republicans in the past, President Obama and Speaker Pelosi have charted our country on a disastrous course that we must change.
Congress is spending like there is no tomorrow, piling up an insurmountable debt that must be repaid by our children and grandchildren. They are expanding the federal government into our personal lives in unprecedented ways. Even worse, they are trying to change the culture to diminish the principles and values that make America the greatest nation in history.
I encourage you to read the document for yourself, and feel free to send me feedback about what you think. Moving forward, if Republicans do indeed take the majority back in Congress, it will be important for you to lend your voice and hold them accountable, to make sure that they do what they said they would do.
Sincerely,
Jim Jordan
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator George V. Voinovich (R-Ohio) today released the following statement on “A Pledge to America,” a new governing agenda focused on addressing the American people’s top priorities. The pledge is the culmination of a months-long engagement with the American people in which House Republicans sought their ideas and priorities for Congress:
“I am very pleased that House Minority Leader John Boehner and his team have taken a bold step forward and outlined the Republican plan for the change Americans are demanding. For the past two years, the voices of the American people have been ignored. Our president and the Democrats have been on the stump talking about change, but statistics show that they have been in a bunker when it comes to creating jobs, stimulating the economy, and improving the quality of life for families across the country. “The only issue Democrats haven’t been in the bunker on is spending. Over the past two years our national debt increased by almost $4 trillion while Democrats passed a $2 trillion health care bill and a stimulus bill now estimated by the Congressional Budget Office to cost $860 billion. We borrow more than 41 cents of every dollar we spend, but in spite of all this people are still asking, ‘Where are the jobs?’
“Things are more challenging now for our nation than at any point in my lifetime. Americans are worried about our nation’s future and their own personal well being – and this uncertainty reveals itself in the answers to two questions I often ask when I speak to citizens. The first question is, ‘Do you have a better standard of living than your parents had?’ I almost always hear yes. I then ask whether they believe their children will have a better standard of living than the one they have. Most say no.
“As Ronald Reagan said, America is a shining city upon a hill, and the Republican Party refuses to let our light extinguish. It is time to tackle our massive national debt which threatens the prosperity of our children. It is time to support proposals such as a paid-for, multi-year highway bill – a proven job creator – rather than continuing to throw borrowed money at special interests. It is time to honor the will of the people and protect the American health care system. And, it is time to tackle tax and entitlement reform – something I have supported for more than a decade and will continue to fight for even after I leave the Senate.
“Americans are paying attention, and they cannot endure any more of Washington’s misguided agenda. Having heard the voices of the American people, Republicans are well-prepared to move America forward and champion the principles of our Founding Fathers. ‘A Pledge to America’ demonstrates that John Boehner will make a distinguished Speaker of the House – a leader that offers concrete solutions to our nation’s problems, and turns challenges into opportunities.”
P.S. I am thrilled that I will not be here to have to answer to this conservative agenda...
A group (Ohio Chamber) breaks their over 100 year tradition of staying neutral in order to endorse John Kasich...
"In our 117 year history we have never endorsed in a statewide race outside of the supreme court," said Andy Doehrel, president and CEO of the chamber. "Today that changes."
And how does Team Ted respond?
"Congressman Kasich can fight for Wall Streeters and outsourcers, Ted will fight for Ohio," said Strickland communications director Lis Smith.
Just how stupid and out of touch are these people?
WASHINGTON, D.C., Sept. 23, 2010 — Today the National Federation of Independent Business, America’s leading small business association, announced its full support and endorsement of Rich Iott for election to the U.S. House of Representatives from Ohio’s 9th District.
“Rich Iott is a small business owner and NFIB member, which makes this endorsement especially meaningful,” said Lisa Goeas, NFIB’s vice president for political operations. “Our small business membership knows that Rich is one of their own, which means they are even more likely to actively support his candidacy by encouraging their employees, friends and family members to turn out and vote for him on Election Day.”
“We believe that Rich Iott’s perspective as a business owner will help Congress develop policies that let small business do what it does best, which is create jobs and grow the economy.”
There are more than 200,000 small employers in Ohio . Nationally, small businesses create more than half of the nation’s non-farm gross domestic product and have created more than 60 percent of net new jobs in the U.S. over the past 15 years.
Today’s endorsement comes from NFIB’s Save America’s Free Enterprise Trust, the association’s political action committee, and is based on candidates’ positions on key small business issues including healthcare, taxes, and labor and regulatory issues.
WASHINGTON – Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) released the following statement after House Republicans presented A Pledge to America, a new governing agenda focused on addressing the American people’s top priorities. The Pledge is the culmination of a months-long engagement with the American people in which House Republicans sought their ideas and priorities for Congress. The agenda offers concrete solutions that can be implemented immediately to tackle the issues that are most important to the nation, including job creation, spending restraint, national security, health care, and reform to Congress itself. The full agenda, A Pledge to America, can be viewed here.
“For too long, the voices of the American people have been ignored in Washington. While Americans have been speaking out, those in power have carried out a job-killing, big-spending agenda that doesn’t reflect the priorities of the people. House Republicans have been listening to the American people and understand that the nation’s focus is on issues like creating jobs, reining in spending, and changing a dysfunctional Congress. It’s time that the priorities of the people once again set the agenda in Washington, so we are offering a Pledge to America. Through this pledge we are presenting a set of bold solutions, renewing a commitment to our founding principles, and offering a new way of doing business in Washington. “With Americans looking for job creation, we are offering a jobs plan to end the economic uncertainty for American small businesses and make America more competitive. As massive debt threatens the prosperity of our children, we have a credible plan to rein in the budget deficit. To keep America safe from threats abroad and on our border, this pledge offers a commitment to national and border security. To honor the will of the people and protect the American health care system, we have a plan to repeal the new health care law and replace it with solutions to bring down costs. And as Americans increasingly view Congress as a broken institution, we offer a plan for reform to provide real accountability and transparency.”
Washington, D.C. -- U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Senate Republican Whip Jon Kyl (R-AZ), Senate Republican Conference Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Senate Republican Policy Committee Chairman John Thune (R-SD), National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (R-TX), and Senate Republican Conference Vice Chairman John Barrasso (R-WY) released the following joint statement in support of “A Pledge to America.”
“Americans are speaking out and we are listening. The proposals put forward today by House Republicans reflect what Americans are saying. They want to us to focus on jobs first, fight wasteful Washington spending, repeal and replace the health spending bill and shrink an exploding deficit. Americans want a smaller, less costly and more accountable government. “We strongly support this effort, and together, House and Senate Republicans will continue to fight for these principles. While the White House will retain the veto pen, House and Senate Republicans will focus on making America more competitive, reducing the size and cost of government, keeping our nation strong and secure, and reining in the massive health care costs and mandates imposed by the Democrats’ health spending bill.”
STERLING, VA – House Republicans today put forth “A Pledge to America,” a new governing agenda built by listening to the American people and focused on addressing their top priorities – including creating jobs, cutting spending, and changing the way Congress works. This new governing agenda was unveiled during a press event at Tart Lumber Company, a family-owned small business located in Sterling, VA. Republicans stressed that this governing agenda could be implemented right now if President Obama and Democratic Leaders would allow it, and called for action before Congress adjourns.
“Across America, the people see a government in Washington that isn’t listening, doesn’t get it, and doesn’t care. Today, that begins to change,” House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) said. “This new governing agenda, built by listening to the people, offers plans to create jobs, cut spending, and put power where it belongs: in the hands of the people. 'A Pledge to America' offers a new way forward that hasn’t been tried in Washington: an approach focused on cutting spending instead of accelerating spending, and eliminating uncertainty for the private-sector innovators and entrepreneurs who create jobs. These are the solutions the American people are demanding, and Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid should act on them before Congress adjourns for the fall.”
“A Pledge to America” – which can be downloaded in PDF format at http://pledge.gop.gov/ – is the byproduct of the America Speaking Out initiative, which Republicans launched in May to listen and engage the American people in the creation of a new governing agenda.
As opposed to a broad policy platform or long-term agenda, “A Pledge to America” is based on the need for urgent action to address the American people’s priorities – priorities that continue to be ignored and even openly mocked by Washington Democrats.
Prior to today’s unveiling, House Republicans held a roundtable with local small business owners to talk about the challenges they are facing in today’s tough economic climate. NOTE: The preamble to “A Pledge to America” reaffirms Republicans’ commitment to principles of smaller, more accountable government; economic freedom; lower taxes; fiscal responsibility; protecting life, American values, and the Constitution; and providing for a strong national defense. This new governing agenda is comprised of five specific policy plans that could be implemented right now if President Obama and Democratic Leaders would allow it:
Creating Jobs. “A Pledge to America” reflects Americans’ demand for immediate action on policies that will end uncertainty for small businesses and help our economy get back to creating jobs. This new governing agenda contains a plan to create jobs, end economic uncertainty, and make America competitive – including stopping all tax hikes, reining in red tape, and repealing ObamaCare’s ‘1099 mandate.’
Cutting Spending. “A Pledge to America” embodies Americans’ rejection of the now-thoroughly discredited notion that we can simply tax, spend, and borrow our way to prosperity. This new governing agenda contains a plan to cut spending and reduce the size of government – including cutting government spending to pre-‘stimulus’, pre-bailout levels, imposing a hard cap on future discretionary spending, and ending TARP once and for all.
Reforming Congress. “A Pledge to America” acknowledges that we cannot get our arms around the issues of the day when we have a government that refuses to listen to the people and ignores their priorities. This new governing agenda contains a plan to reform Congress and restore trust – including implementing ‘read the bill’ reform, allowing for more open and fair debate, and requiring that every bill contain a citation of Constitutional authority.
Repealing and Replacing The Job-Killing Health Care Law. “A Pledge to America” recognizes that the American people continue to squarely oppose the government takeover of health care, with its higher costs, higher taxes, job-killing mandates, and Medicare cuts to pay for a massive new entitlement. This new governing agenda contains a plan to repeal and replace the job-killing health care law with common-sense reforms focused on lowering costs and protecting American jobs.
A Strong National Defense. “A Pledge to America” reinforces Congress’s responsibility to help provide for a strong national defense and fashion a coherent strategy to confront and defeat the terrorist threat. This new governing agenda contains a plan to keep our nation secure at home and abroad – including passing clean troop funding bills, keeping terrorists off American soil, and fully funding missile defense.
The National Tax Limitation Committee (NTLC) has honored Congressional Representative John A. Boehner with its 111th Congress “Tax Fighter Award.” NTLC President Lewis K. Uhler presented the award to John A. Boehnerin Washington, saying “John A. Boehner’s votes on tax and spending issues in the 111th Congress earned an ‘A’ grade and the Tax Fighter Award. “John A. Boehner has led the battle on behalf of taxpayers to stop the passage of ObamaCare and cap-and-trade legislation, to make the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts permanent, to eliminate the death tax, to kill the Alternative Minimum Tax, to provide incentives for private savings, investment and job creation and to control the growth of federal spending. “John A. Boehner has been a major asset to taxpayers across America during his congressional service, having earned the Tax fighter Award consistently in every session of Congress. John A. Boehner has had the courage to challenge the orthodoxy of Washington spending and earmarks,” concluded Uhler.
Since 1975 the National Tax Limitation Committee, a 501(c)(4) grass roots taxpayer activist organization, has worked to limit taxes and spending and to reduce the size and scope of government at all levels. NTLC has led the national movement for constitutional tax and spending limits at the stat and federal levels. NTLC publishes a congressional scorecard at the conclusion of each Congress, as it has for more than a quarter-century.
Berea, OH — Community organizer Matt Patten’s patently false smear campaign on U.S. Navy veteran and small business owner Mike Dovilla continued this week with absurd charges of a “dangerous plan” to slash Ohio’s state budget by 40 percent and place public safety at risk. The fact is Mike Dovilla has no such plan to balance the state’s budget on the backs of Ohio’s law enforcement and public safety officials. In fact, Dovilla has earned the endorsement of the Ohio Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association for his support of police officers and the Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants for his responsible approach to addressing the state’s impending $8 billion budget deficit over the next biennium. “I don’t know what plan Matt Patten is looking at,” said Dovilla. “But if he would go to my website and read The Dovilla Plan to Get Ohio Working, he would see that my plan does not call for a 40 percent cut in the state budget. Rather, it calls for these six points: (1) creating jobs for Ohioans; (2) improving economic development; (3) renewing our commitment to world-class education; (4) reforming state government to work for the people; (5) adopting a comprehensive energy policy; and (6) providing affordable and accessible health care. I would also note that although Matt Patten has been in Columbus for 21 months, he still doesn’t seem to have any plan to start putting Ohioans back to work or restore our state’s economy.” A native of Berea and resident of his hometown for more than 23 years, Mike Dovilla is running for the legislature to Get Ohio Working by creating a business-friendly environment that will create jobs, promote economic development, and retain our state’s talented residents. The 18th District is composed of Berea, North Royalton, Olmsted Falls, Olmsted Township, and Strongsville.
UPDATE: I have skimmed the document while engaged in other work that actually pays... It is filled with high-minded rhetoric that strikes a lot of the right chords, but the melody is a bit off. Does it have too many notes? Maybe. I didn't see anything in it that had steam shooting out of my ears, but there were some things that I expected to see and didn't (Balanced Budget Amendment, for example).
Lakeville, OH – Bob Gibbs received two more endorsements in his race for Ohio's 18th Congressional seat. The Ohio Society of CPA’s as well as the Business Industry PAC announced they support Gibbs’ candidacy.
"Given our challenging economic times, Bob Gibbs' practical small business and farming experience, combined with his extensive knowledge of our tax system, provide the background necessary to help lead our nation out of this recession and into prosperity. He would be an excellent representative for Eastern Ohioans," said Clarke Price, President and CEO of the Ohio Society of CPAs.
“You know your constituents - the farms, families, and what’s needed to bring jobs and economic growth to Ohio. Your policy experience and real world know how will make you a strong voice for job creation and economic prosperity in the 112th Congress,” Gregory Casey, President and CEO of BIPAC told Gibbs.
“These endorsements go to show that the business community is fed up with the status quo and are ready for a change” said Gibbs. “Businesses in the 18th district cannot survive the high tax, low impact policies that Zack Space has voted for. We need to lower taxes, reduce spending, and trim burdensome regulations so we can get people back to work.”
Last week Gibbs' has also received the endorsement of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB).
Akron, Ohio - Frank LaRose, candidate for the Ohio Senate, recently received the endorsement of several statewide business organizations for his campaign to represent Summit County in Ohio's 27th Senate District.
Based on his commitment to fight for jobs and economic growth as a member of the Ohio Senate, Frank has been endorsed by such organizations as the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, the National Federation of Independent Business, the Ohio Restaurant Association, the Ohio Society of CPAs and received the designation as a "Friend of Agriculture" by the Ohio Farm Bureau.
"I am honored to have the support of organizations that share my commitment for returning Ohio to prosperity," said Frank LaRose. "I look forward to partnering with each group's respective members to create an environment in Ohio where all businesses can grow and thrive."
Washington, D.C., September 21, 2010 — Here we go again – another year, another “World Car-Free Day,” the annual day (Wednesday, September 22) dedicated to life without the automobile. In response, the Competitive Enterprise Institute urges people to protest - by taking a drive, just because.
“The automobile has improved the lives of hundreds of millions of people in remarkable ways,” said Sam Kazman, CEI General Counsel. “It has taken the mobility once reserved for aristocrats and democratized it, immensely expanding the choices that average people have regarding where to live and work. Instead of pushing a misguided political agenda to reduce car use, we should be celebrating automobility,” said Kazman.
As University of Virginia philosophy professor Loren Lomasky noted in his automobile study for the Competitive Enterprise Institute, Autonomy and Automobility, the car is one of the three most liberating technologies ever developed.
Walking and biking have health and lifestyle benefits for many people, but the sponsors of World Car-Free Day are going beyond simply advocating lifestyle changes - they are urging politicians to restrict car use and instead promote mass transit systems that will require ever-expanding taxpayer subsidies. In contrast to the photographs on various Car-Free Day websites, which show healthy young people in picture-perfect weather, advocates of car-free living ought to be portray what it would mean in more realistic conditions, such as:
When it's raining
When you’re carrying several bags of groceries
When you’re carrying a baby, with a toddler alongside you
On crutches
After midnight
Without using a car or cab to get to the train or bus station
Mytheos Holt over at National Review has writted the MUST READ piece of the day entitled "Ted Strickland's Rusty Vision."
What Ohio can’t afford is more abuse from Strickland’s party. At the national level, the Democratic economic agenda is set by Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid, whose fantasies about green jobs and hostility to trade are doing no favors to struggling Rust Belt economies. Meanwhile, Strickland’s own program is fundamentally at loggerheads with the economic-development strategy currently being pursued by the very Ohio Department of Development the governor was so eager to praise.
Currently, the department works from a model that emphasizes the comparative advantages of Ohio’s major cities by designating them “centers of excellence” or “hubs” of various industries. So far, seven such hubs have been named, the most recent being Columbus, which was designated the Ohio Hub of Advanced Energy Manufacturing and Storage. The other centers are the Youngstown Entrepreneurial Hub of Advanced Materials Commercialization and Software Development, the Akron Biomaterials Commercialization Hub, the Cincinnati Consumer Marketing Hub of Innovation, the Toledo Northwest Ohio Solar Energy Innovation Hub, the Cleveland Health and Technology Corridor Hub, and the Ohio Aerospace Hub in Dayton.
Without exception, every single one of the industries attached to these “hubs” has been handicapped or soon will be handicapped by either the Democratic legislative agenda or Strickland’s own actions.
The answer is: All three. Colin Powell, former relevant person who betrayed principle and endorsed Obama because "he's down with the struggle", has now shown that he is a criminal, a racist, and a liar, who is willing, just like Obama, to throw anyone under the bus for his mistakes. To wit, on Sunday, Colin Powell, in order to keep his "struggle" streetcred, went to Meet the dePress(ed), where he talked about illegal immigration and shamnesty, which he loves:
POWELL: The American people want their borders to be protected. There's nothing wrong with that. There's nothing wrong with making sure that people come across our borders, particularly our southern border, in a legal, safe manner. But at the same time we have millions and millions of illegal immigrants in our country, undocumented individuals, who are working, who are doing things we need done in this country. They're all over my house doing things whenever I call for repairs. I'm sure you've seen them at your house.
OK, so, the Colon Powellyp is now making the assumption that people working on his house are illegals. Does he know this? If not, isn't he just making an assumption based on a person's ethnicity or job/social status? Doesn't that make him a bigot? Isn't he guilty of racial profiling. And, of course, if he knows they are illegals, then he is in direct violation of the law and would be subject to enforcement of the one immigration statute dems like to enforce: going after those who hire illegals.
Well, someone must have told the Colon Powellyp that he ticked off la Raza and subjected himself to possible criminal investigation, so he said this in USA Today, "clarifying" his remarks:
"I don't hire illegal immigrants," Powell says in a statement today. "On Meet the Press yesterday, I referred to illegal immigrants working around my house. I was referring to the many service contractors who work in my neighborhood, using mostly immigrant workers, who do good work. Some may well be 'illegal.'
So, because he opened his mouth and stuck his backstabbing, racially bigoted foot in his mouth, he is now throwing contractors under the bus. But, where is the apology? This man is still assuming that the people working on his house are illegals. If a non-Obama supporter said this, there would be rioting. But since the Colon Powellyp has been woken up to the glory of His Self-Centeredness, Obama, then it is ok, he just misspoke. Right.....
And, if the Colon Powellyp is hiring illegals or those contractors who use illegals, he must not care for his African American brethren in the construction business, who are hurting for work......Guess he is not so much down for the struggle as down for whatever issue gets him back in the good graces of the press and back in front of the cameras. Racist. Bigot. Liar. Criminal.
It is time this Powellyp was removed and discarded into the biohazard pile.
Ohio RINOvichian candidate for Attorney General, Mike DeWine, tried his very desperate best to tie Democrat Rich Cordray to the Cuyahoga County Demcorat Culture of Corruption scandal and wound up looking like a fool. The final lines of this Columbus Dispatch piece sums the whole thing up:
"This is grandstanding on Mike DeWine's part," Cordray said. "That's all it is, pure and simple."
I am no fan of Cordray by any stretch of the imagnination, but I despised Democrats who tried to pin Tom Noe crap on every Republican in this state and this is no different.
S. E. Cupp got the opportunity to ask Rob Portman 8 questions; most of which were entertaining, but beauty pageant questions but two of them are worth taking a look at:
SE: You’re put in charge of national unemployment. What do you do?
RP: Change directions. Immediately redirect remaining stimulus dollars to create 4-5 million jobs by enacting a one year suspension of the payroll tax on the first $50,000 of income – puts more money in peoples’ pockets and helps employers invest in expansion and jobs. End the TARP bail out and direct all repaid dollars to pay down the record national debt to show we are serious about getting our fiscal house in order. Ease the uncertainty that employers and job creators feel right now by stopping the job-killing proposals like card check, the new energy tax, tax increases on small businesses, and burdensome regulations and correcting the health care bill.
SE: What’s your favorite work of fiction, and why?
RP: Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher’s campaign ads.
Read more of the interview at the Daily Callerhere.
And, yes, I know that second one was a beauty pageant question too, but I really like Rob's answer... :)
UPDATE: In the comments j.hart said...
"Repeal" is a word I like when the health care bill is mentioned. "Correct" makes me uneasy.
I agree. I'd like to see Rob Portman stressing the REPEAL rhetoric, but that's just not his style. To be perfectly honest, I'm too afraid to ask Team Portman if Rob favors repealing it...but like most of us, I sure would like to know.
The GOP candidate for the U.S. Senate, former Congressman Rob Portman, wants to repeal the new health-care law. His Democratic opponent, Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher, says the overhaul did not go far enough.
Speaking separately today at the Ohio Hospital Association’s annual meeting in Columbus, the candidates agreed that soaring health-care costs are unsustainable, too many Americans are unable to get coverage, and the system desperately needs reform. But on how to tackle the problem, there was little common ground.
“The health-care bill doesn’t solve the problem, it makes it worse,” Portman said. “More should have been done about cost control.”
The House passed the legislation in March without a single Republican vote. Earlier, it had been opposed by every Republican in the Senate.
Portman said he supports provisions of the legislation aimed at expanding access to health coverage and ensuring that those with pre-existing conditions can get insurance. But the Obama administration and Democratic leaders in the House and Senate did not focus enough on reducing costs, he said.
Referring to a recent study by the Kaiser Family Foundation, Portman noted that the legislation will cost Ohio an additional $266 million a year in expanded Medicaid costs.
He said he favors medical malpractice reform, greater emphasis on prevention and wellness, allowing health insurance to be sold across state lines to increase competition and expanding the use of technology to slow rising health-care costs.
And rather than a single piece of legislation to address the problem, Portman said he thinks reform would be more manageable in a series of smaller bills.
In remarks about 30 minutes later, Fisher said, “Health-care reform needs to go much further than it did.”
Emphasis added. I am going to trust that the writer is acurately describing Portman's position in the first sentence of the piece. I would be reassured by a quote wherein Portman actually says, "I, Rob Portman, would favor REPEAL and REPLACE" rather than I like parts of the bill but other parts are yucky. But I now classify Portman as a REPEAL vote and plan to hold him to it.
WASHINGTON- Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green) made the following statement in recognition of Constitution Day.
“Today we celebrate the signing of the United States Constitution and recognize its importance in our nation’s history. We were blessed as a nation to have individuals that put self-interest and sectionalism aside to debate, argue, draft and sign the Constitution. Our Constitution has been that beacon upon the hill, that guiding star at night, and that shining city that millions of persons around the word have longed to be guided by within their own countries.
This week, I introduced H. Res. 1612, which recognizes and honors September 17th as Constitution Day. In 1956, Congress established Constitution week so that every American citizen could learn more about the Constitution. In 2004, the 17th of each September was designated as Constitution Day. I am pleased to introduce this Resolution to stand up and support the Constitution because it deserves the recognition, respect, and reverence of all people in the United States.
In celebration of today, I would encourage all Americans to sit down and read this great document. Since the Constitution’s ratification, it has been the framework for our great nation. Not only did great men bring it forth, but for two hundred twenty-three years this Constitution has been paid for by hundreds of thousands of lives- the lives of our brave military men and women. Let the living give thanks to our honored dead who have paid the ultimate sacrifice that the Constitution of the United States remains our guiding light.”
On Tuesday, Congressman Latta spoke on the House floor in support of his Constitution Day resolution, which was passed by voice vote. Video of his remarks can be found here.
Congressman Latta’s blog also features a Constitution Day post, which can be found here.
Since 2009, Congressman Latta has distributed information packets to high school government classes throughout the Fifth Congressional District on Constitution Day. The packets include a copy of his Constitution Day resolution, a two-page letter to the students, and copies of pocket Constitutions.
(Columbus) - As Gov. Ted Strickland and top Democrats continued their tired and hypocritical campaign against Wall Street today, federal investigators arrested eight more people involved in a growing corruption scandal among Democratic officials in Cuyahoga County.
The arrests include County Commissioner and former Democratic Party chairman Jimmy Dimora and Judge Steven Terry, a Strickland appointee whose "integrity" the governor formerly praised.
When asked more than two years ago whether Dimora should resign, Strickland laughed and said he was "reserving judgment." The governor also refused to call for Dimora to step down as county Democratic Party chair, saying he "doesn't feel it's appropriate for him to ask Dimora to leave." (The Plain Dealer, 8/13/08)
"Ted Strickland has had plenty of opportunities to show leadership in Cuyahoga County, but he stayed silent," said Ohio Republican Party Chairman Kevin DeWine. "The governor is more obsessed with righteous indigation toward Wall Street than cleaning up the corruption in his own party on Main Street."
Dimora, along with former county auditor Frank Russo, who was arrested last week, contributed more than $50,000 to Strickland, Attorney General Richard Cordray and Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner.
The Ohio Republican Party released the following ad more than a year ago, exposing Gov. Strickland's failure to denounce corruption Cuyahoga County:
For the Record
Ted Strickland Said His Administration "Will Set a Higher Standard of Conduct."
* His own administration will set a higher standard of conduct, Mr. Strickland said, starting at the top and holding others accountable. (Toledo Blade, 9/1/06)
Ted Strickland Said He Would "Get Rid of the Corruption."
* "We're going to get rid of the corruption," Strickland said. "We're going to hold people accountable." (The Associated Press, 9/5/06) Ted Strickland Said Ohio Was Suffering from a "Corruption Tax."
* Strickland said Ohio "is suffering from a corruption tax," promising to bring sweeping changes to the way public business is done in Columbus and elsewhere. (Cincinnati Enquirer, 10/17/06) Ted Strickland Said He Would Not Let Ohioans Down in Fighting Corruption.
* He added that "11.3 million Ohioans depend on us [to fight corruption], and we're not going to let them down." (The Athens News, 10/30/06) Ted Strickland Promised to End Corrupt Government.
* Ohioans want their next governor to be "someone who avoids the corrupt pay to play leadership" that has plagued the state, Strickland said. (The Associated Press, 9/5/06)
Jimmy Dimora, a Cuyahoga County Commissioner, has been the latest Democrat to be arrested by the FBI. If you haven't been following the continuing saga of Cuyahoga County Corruption, this guy has been rather defiant in his political theatre regarding his innocence; but it was only a matter of time after Frank Russo went down...
Rasmussen's latest poll has Rob Portman getting the highest level of support he has received to date in this race. The shift in momentum caused another reclassification of the race back to Leans GOP. The race stands at 49-41 Portman, and that is a well deserved push in the right direction.
Many of us still would like to hear more from Portman on what other issues (Hey, Rob, you got us on the economy and jobs, what else ya got?) that would indicate what kind of Senator we would be getting. We still have not heard what sort of judicial philosphy Portman has (Would Rob have voted to confirm Kagan and/or Sotomayor) or his thoughts on energy (All of the Above?) let alone thorny issues like illegal immigration.
So far, the "Let's Cost on 'Til E-Day" strategy is working, but I can only imagine what sort of blowout this race could be...
UPDATE: The key piece that this poll sheds light on is the "independent" vote:
Portman is backed by 89% of Ohio Republicans, while Fisher draws support from 77% of the state's Democrats. Portman holds a 19-point advantage among voters not affiliated with either major political party.
"Too many Republicans are obsessed with being 'reasonable.' Reasonable isn't on the ballot. Reversing Obamaism and defeating it is what the American people want. And a majority of them, by the way -- including larger-than-ever numbers of independents, the so-called precious middle." -- Rush Limbaugh
(Columbus) - The Ohio Republican Party released a new web ad today targeting Gov. Ted Strickland's angry rant against Republicans last week.
"We're going to continue to make this an issue until the governor apologizes," said Ohio Republican Party Chairman Kevin DeWine. "Ted Strickland wants to pretend his comments were taken out of context, but the record speaks for itself. It's offensive and hypocritical that he's out there claiming to respect people who disagree with him at the same time he's attacking his political opponents as radical zealots who don't like America. This is the behavior of an angry, losing candidate, not a statesman."
At one campaign event, Strickland hypocritically claims to be respectful of people who disagree with him:
* "I try to be respectful of people, even if they disagree with me."
("Main Street Tour: Ted in Youngstown," Strickland Campaign Video, 7/27/10)
At another campaign event, Strickland angrily attacks Republicans who disagree with him:
* "The Republican Party has been overtaken by the zealots, by the extremists, by the radicals, by the reckless, and they don't seem to like Ohio very much, and, quite frankly, they act as if they don't like America very much.
(Dublin, Ohio) The Ohio Society of CPAs today endorsed Dave Yost, Republican candidate for Auditor of State.
Yost, a former county auditor who now serves as Delaware County's prosecuting attorney, received the OSCPA endorsement in large part due to his past experience and future priorities, according to the Society's voter guide. "We look forward to working with Dave as he builds on current State Auditor Mary Taylor's strong financial controls across state and local government, significantly expands Ohio's performance audit program, and aggressively evaluates suspected fraudulent activities on the part of public officials to protect Ohio taxpayers," said Clark Price, President of the OSCPA.
The Ohio Society of CPAs is a professional association of more than 23,000 Certified Public Accountants working in public accounting, corporate industry, education and government to meet the accounting and financial needs of businesses and individuals throughout Ohio. It represents the profession's interests before government, regulatory bodies, and other organizations. It is also the premier endorsement in the race for State Auditor.
The OSCPA-endorsed candidate has always won election. They have been endorsing since 1994.
"This endorsement speaks volumes," said Jim Petro, who served two terms as Ohio Auditor. "These are the professionals who know best who will make the better Auditor. To have their support is an affirmation of Dave's qualifications and professionalism."
"I'm honored to be endorsed by the Ohio Society of CPAs," Yost said. "Their support is crucial to my campaign. I look forward to working beside them as State Auditor."
It's not like thre was a choice... Who are they going to pick? David Pepper? PUH-LEEEEESE.

Rob Portman Has A Plan To Create Ohio Jobs. “It’s time for new leadership and new ideas to turn things around and chart a path to prosperity for our great state. Ohioans are suffering through the worst economic recession since the Great Depression. Since the Strickland-Fisher Administration took office in January 2007, and Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher became Jobs Czar, Ohio has lost nearly 400,000 jobs and our unemployment rate has more than doubled. Even for those who are working, paychecks are not stretching as far as they used to, and the value of homes and retirement accounts have declined, putting more pressure on working families. We are at a moment of truth for Ohio. Now is the time for bold action and decisions to turn things around.” (Portman For Senate Website, www.robportman.com, Accessed 7/27/10)
“The Portman Plan For Ohio Jobs Offers Specific Proposals To Get Ohio And Our Nation Back On The Path To Prosperity. The Plan Consists Of Six Pillars:
Supporting Ohio Workers
Helping Small Businesses Succeed
Strengthening the Environment for Job Creation
Reforming Financial Regulations to Hold Wall Street Accountable
Healing the Economy by Reducing the Deficit
Getting Directly Involved in Economic Development”
